Tell Me About Tid's Work on The SLAC Shared Data Facility.
Bonetti:One of the big things that we've done over the last year is consolidate all the lab's data processing and analytics into what's called S3DF, a SLAC shared data facility currently under construction.
This facility will make sure that we can perform all of the massive scale data analytics we need to get science out of our user facilities and .
,
What Are Some of The Other Cool Projects You're Working on?
Bonetti: SLAC is also involved with one of the Department of Energy's quantum science centers, called Q-NEXT.
It's a partnership between SLAC, DOE’s Argonne National Lab, Stanford University and a bunch of industrial partners.
One of the major parts of SLAC's contribution to Q-NEXT is creating the Detector Microfabrication Facility, a facility to h.

What is machine learning at SLAC?
Reinforce yourself to be there! Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are found across all scientific directorates at SLAC, with applications to a wide range of tasks including:
- online data reduction
- system controls
- simulation
- analysis of big data
,
What is SLAC's scientific computing system?
The Scientific Computing Systems department, a unit of the Controls and Data Systems division within SLAC’s Technology Innovation Directorate, is creating an integrated scientific computing infrastructure for the lab.
,
What is the SLAC ml initiative?
Making sense of all that data is a major challenge.
The SLAC ML initiative aims to deploy the latest ML technology to help maximize the science potential of LCLS.
Compounding this challenge, SLAC is currently building a $1bn+ upgrade to LCLS, known as LCLS-II.
The current LCLS operates at 120 Hz.
,
What Kind of Work Is Tid Doing with Lcls-Ii?
Herbst:One of the things that our division was recently responsible for deploying was the high-performance, low-latency control systems on LCLS-II.
So that included the timing system in conjunction with Amedeo's group, the RF distribution system, the machine protection system, the beam positioning system – where they can basically see where the bea.

What Makes You Excited to Work in Tid?
Bonetti:The thing that motivates me is coming to work every day to work with everyone in TID and support them in doing the science and the technology development that they're passionate about.
It's helping people feel excited being part of research and development by doing the work that they want to do, which is the reason they came to SLAC in the .

Why is SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory doubling in size?
A computing facility at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is doubling in size, preparing the lab for new scientific endeavors that promise to revolutionize our understanding of the world from atomic to cosmic scales but also require handling unprecedented data streams.
Bonetti:Our mission is evolving pretty quickly, which is great and exciting,It is unreasonable to save such raw data to disk, so SLAC is developing hardware accelerated streaming data analysis methods in order to deal with this new paradigm: to reduce the data to a minimal representation of a managable size that preserves the information contained in the data while minimizing extraneous noise and systematic and known structures.
