  • How to set backup compression in SQL Server?

    Using SQL Server Management Studio

    1. In Object Explorer, right-click a server and select Properties
    2. Click the Database settings node
    3. Under Backup and restore, Compress backup shows the current setting of the backup compression default option

  • Is Hana backup compressed?

Currently, SAP HANA supports the LZ4 compression algorithm only.
For more information about how to change parameter settings, see Database Configuration in SAP HANA Cockpit .
By default, data backup compression is disabled.
You can enable compression of data backups using SQL..

  • Should you compress backup files?

Backing up your operating system is a smart way to protect your data and settings in case of a disaster.
However, backup files can take up a lot of space and be vulnerable to unauthorized access.
That's why you might want to compress and encrypt your backup data before storing it..

  • What is backup compression?

Backup compression is a process where the size of files is reduced by re-encoding the files to use fewer bits of storage than the original file.
The fundamental element of backup compression is that the original files can be transferred or stored, recreated, and then used..

  • Backup compression is supported on SQL Server editions: Enterprise, Standard, and Developer.
    Every edition of SQL Server 2008 (10.0. x) and later can restore a compressed backup.Feb 28, 2023
  • If your DB is full of the same byte repeated then it's going to compress to an extremely small size, maybe a ratio of 99.9% or better.
Your data is probable somewhere inbetween, so it'll compress somewhere between 0.1% and 99.9%.
The backup industry likes to advertise that "most" data can be 50% compressed.
Currently, SAP HANA supports the LZ4 compression algorithm only. For more information about how to change parameter settings, see Database Configuration in SAP

How does the database engine backup a database using compression?

Therefore, by default, when backing up a database using compression, the Database Engine uses a pre-allocation algorithm for the backup file

This algorithm pre-allocates a predefined percentage of the size of the database for the backup file

If more space is needed during the backup operation, the Database Engine grows the file

What if the backup command is specified with compression?

If the backup command is specified WITH COMPRESSION or the backup compression default server configuration is set to 1, MAXTRANSFERSIZE will automatically be increased to 128K to enable the optimized algorithm

If MAXTRANSFERSIZE is specified on the backup command with a value > 64K, the provided value will be honored
