Dendrology is a branch of botany that focuses on the identification and taxonomy of woody plants, including trees, shrubs, and vines. Our Forest Communities courses extend this information to include geographic location and habitat type.

Dendrology actually means "the study of trees." In common usage it has come to mean the taxonomy of woody plants (Harlow and others 1979), which is the systematic classification, naming, and identification of trees based on natural attributes and relationships.
