Is a phd in astrophysics worth it

Most people don’t become researchers or professors.
It's quite a journey to go from starting you undergraduate degree to landing a permanent job in astrophysics
And can lead to many different outcomes.
I don't think you can know at this point if at each step you'll still want to carry on.

To be awarded the Doctoral Degree in Astrophysics a student must write and defend a dissertation that presents the results of independent research.
To progress to that point
Each student must first pass the Qualifying Examination to become a doctoral candidate.

If you recognise that and it still fires you up
it will likely be very worth it.
If you don't really know what you're getting in to
Chances are you'll either end up dropping out
Changing degree or (more likely) in a well paying job that isn't at all related to astrophysics.

Students who have taken graduate courses elsewhere may petition the GPC in astrophysics to have those courses evaluated for transfer credit to avoid unnecessary duplication and speed up the student’s entry into research

Students must complete these courses in the first two years of graduate study: The first four of these are three-credit courses
