TYPES OF SHIPS
On any given day, around 50,000 Sailors are deployed globally aboard any one of approximately 100 ships.
Navy vessels range in size from massive aircraft carriers to small coastal patrol ships.
Open wounds, musculoskeletal sprains and strains, contusions, superficial injuries, and burns are among the most frequent types of injuries.
Many battle injuries were caused by flying splinters of wood as cannonballs crashed into the ships.
Crushing injuries/broken bones – in naval battles, cannon fire often was aimed at the enemy ship's masts in an attempt to bring them down and disable the vessel.
While peacetime naval deployments are generally considered safe, modern sailors face the risk of potential injury due to the associated occupational hazards,6–14 which is significantly increased during naval warfare.
