The document was signed on December 7, 1944, in Chicago by 52 signatory states.
It received the requisite 26th ratification on March 5, 1947, and went into effect on April 4, 1947, the same date that ICAO came into being.
Convention on International Civil Aviation (also known as Chicago Convention), was signed on 7 December 1944 by 52 States.
Pending ratification of the Convention by 26 States, the Provisional International Civil Aviation Organization (PICAO) was established.
It functioned from 6 June 1945 until 4 April 1947.
In addition to setting forth the foundational rules of air- space, the Chicago Convention established a mechanism for developing uniform global standards and recom- mended practices (SARPs) for air navigation and safety.
Known then and today more commonly as the 'Chicago Convention', this landmark agreement laid the foundation for the standards and procedures for peaceful global air navigation.
