Online discussion boards integrate several instructional best practices for students and teachers. Here are three of the main benefits of using online discussion boards in your classroom. All students are required to respond to prompts and respond to their peers. Students then have more time to formulate opinions and thoughtfully respond to others.
The discussion board is the one space built into the course management system where students can see and interact with each other’s work. Make the most of that possibility by creating a discussion topic where each student starts a thread that showcases their work during the semester.
Questions on a discussion board should be clear, punchy, direct, and open-ended. Nothing shuts down a discussion faster than a question to which there is a simple “correct” answer. Instead, consider the following: Ask icebreaker questions. Early interactions set the tone of the course and for later discussions.
Grade accordingly. If you give students explicit guidelines about the kinds of contributions they should make in the discussion board, grades should reflect their work. Questions on a discussion board should be clear, punchy, direct, and open-ended.
