Porcupines occasionally cause damage by chew-

ing into wood surfaces. ?ey search out salts and resins in wood, particularly in plywood, and wood substrates. ?ey have also been known to chew on the logs of log homes and cause damage, especially when a borate wood preser-vative has been used on the logs and not sealed by a ?nish. Again, it is the salts in the borates that the porcupines are trying to ingest.

Prevention

For logs treated with a borate wood preservative,

seal the wood with a log home ?nish. Make sure that wood substrate-type so?t material is also sealed with a ?nish. Fencing can also be used to minimize porcupine damage.

Borate wood preservatives used on laminated

exterior wood siding, such as T1-11, and other similar products, may cause delamination of the wood ?ber sheeting. Check the manufac- ture's guidelines. Other wood preservatives may need to be used.

Treatment

Porcupines are considered nongame animals in

the U.S. and are not protected. Live-trapping with large commercial cage traps or homemade box-style traps are e?ective.

Place the trap near the damage and bait with

a salt-soaked cloth, sponge, or piece of wood.

Once the porcupine is caught, it must be

moved at least 25 miles to ensure that it will not return. Steel leghold traps (number 2 or 3) may be legal in some areas. Day shooting and spotlighting are also e?ective where legal.

Check with your local Fish and Wildlife Ser-

vice for local restrictions.

Wood siding chewed by porcupines.

Treatment for Finish Chewed by Porcupines

Replace damaged plywood or wood substrate

materials with new, ?nished ones. If the damage is from gnawing on log corner notches, an epoxy wood putty can be used to ?ll in the chewed areas. See more about wood epoxies on pages 136-142. If the damage is severe, you may need a log crown, see pages 148-155.

Other options depending on the severity and

location of the damage are half-log and full-log replacement, see pages 156-165.

Watch Those Temps!

With the cooler autumn temperatures, wood

?nishes that are now being applied are taking more time to dry. ?is is slowing down the process of applying subsequent coats. If you are now staining, don't try to rush the job, give the ?nish the time it needs to dry. Adhe- sion failure can happen when applying stain at low temperatures causing later peeling in the spring. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! Keep the mess on the sleeve and away from the threaded barrel.
