Course Description

Management 464, International Business Management, studies various issues related to managing

international businesses effectively. The purpose is to develop skills in identifying critical issues facing,

analyzing key factors related to, and developing solutions for businesses that compete in global business

environments either now or in the future.

Learning Objectives

After you successfully complete this course, you will be able to

• Explain the differences in economic social, political, and cultural variables among countries.

• Evaluate various trade theories and determine the gains from trade and investment. • Distinguish between various trade policies and their economic effects. • Develop competencies in global strategy formulation, including strategic alliances and the integration of all functional areas in a global context. • Develop communication and teamwork skills through case analysis and group projects.

Class Structure

The first half of each class will consist of a short quiz that will review the chapter readings for the week as

well as identification of world countries. Following the quiz, I will discuss some of the most important

aspects of the topic including concepts, theories, research and application of the subject to international

business. Powerpoint slides will be posted to Moodle a day before the class.

Following the break, we will either continue with lecture or have a class discussion of the topic. This

discussion will be based on an assigned case or other assigned material. It is expected that you will have

read the assigned textbook material, including the Closing Case for each chapter. Attendance, Class Participation and Instructor Evaluation (6% of course grade)

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Students who do not stay for the entire class

session will be marked absent. Your preparation for class discussion will be considered, as well as the

extent and quality of your contribution, especially your contribution to case discussions. If it appears that

the class is not adequately prepared to discuss a case, I may require that written case briefs be prepared and

submitted before class. Your team performance is a component of this aspect of the course. You will evaluate your teammates'

contribution to the research paper regarding what that person contributed to the project as well as how that

person contributed to the project (promptness at meetings, active participation to team discussion and

decision making, supportive communication, etc.) 3

Chapter Quizzes (7% of course grade)

A quiz will be administered at the start of each class, at the discretion of the instructor. You will have ten

minutes to complete the quiz, beginning when the instructor distributes the quiz, which will usually be

promptly at the beginning of the class period. From the start of the quiz, you will have ten minutes to

complete the quiz. There are no make-up quizzes. Part of the quiz will consist of multiple choice questions

covering the assigned chapter. On selected weeks, there will also be a country identification quiz ("Where

in the World?") covering selected political/geographic regions. You will be given a map and asked to

identify a number of specific countries on that map. On these weeks, half of the quiz grade will derive from

the multiple choice questions, and half of the quiz grade will derive from the identification quiz.

Quizzes will use the maps found at the following website. The site has excellent interactive maps and

Assignments

International Business Research Paper. Management of multinational enterprises is unique in that it must

consider host-country internal and external factors as well as home-country factors. Thus, it is essential that

a student of international management understand the cultural, economic, political and social forces that

influence the decisions that an enterprise makes to enter and operate within a host country. To this end, one

assignment is to prepare a written paper that evaluates the opportunities and risks associated with a

decision to undertake international business in one of two countries. As a member of a team of four

students, you will determine an industry and two potential countries in which to invest. For your industry,

you will evaluate the attractiveness and pertinent environmental threats and opportunities associated with

the two potential countries, and recommend a country and a method entering into business in that country.

Guidelines and specifics on the content of this paper will be provided in a separate document. You will be

graded on the quality of the research paper and your individual contribution as evaluated by your

teammates. You must use the MLA Stylesheet format to clearly and properly document your paper. Poorly

documented documents will receive a lower grade. This paper contributes 25% toward your final grade.

You will submit work-in-progress reports on a regular basis. This will enhance your project management

skills and hopefully reduce your 'end of semester' anxiety. The following describes content and delivery

dates of the progress reports.

Sept. 2 Team Formati on in class.

Sept. 16 Turn in your two proposed countri es and the proposed international business plan. To get an

early lead on this project, you may discuss your ideas via email or during my office hours. Oct. 7 Turn in an outline of your pape r including major topic headings, a summary of what each chapter will discuss, and which team member(s) will be responsible for each section. Nov. 11 Turn in a first draft of your pape r for my review and comments. This is an optional assignment but highly recommended. 4 Dec. 2 Present a summ ary of your research and business proposal. Powerpoint slides are due to the instructor by midnight, Dec. 1.

Dec. 9 Turn in final report.

In addition, your team will present to the class your analysis, findings, and recommendations of your

research paper using presentation software such as PowerPoint. All team members must present. The presentation contributes 5% toward your final grade.

Weekly Case or Discussion Questions. At the end of each chapter is a brief case or a number of discussion

questions intended to help you sharpen your management skills. You will turn in four written case or
