Aztec gods

The Aztecs worshipped many gods and goddesses. However, the Aztecs praised the Sun god, Huitzilpochtli, most of all for he told the Aztecs where to build their city.

Quetzalcoatl (meaning feathered snake) He was the god of morning and the evening star and therefore the

symbol of death and rebirth. He was also the god of the wind. Quetzalcoatl was often shown with a beard. The temples to him were round because the wind could easily blow round them.

Huitzilopochtli (meaning hummingbird) Huitzilopochtli was the last of the five Suns and was the Sun god. The

Aztecs believed that dead warriors were born again as hummingbirds. Huitzilopochtli, in the form of a hummingbird, was carried in front of the Aztec army when they went into battle. It was Huitzilopochtli who instructed the Aztecs to build their city Tenochtitlan in the lake of the valley of Mexico. Huitzilopochtli also took the form of an eagle. Huitzilopochtli is shown as a warrior whose armour and helmet were made of hummingbird feathers. His upper face was shown as black, everything else was blue.

Tezacatlipoca (meaning smoking mirror) He had a black mirror made of black volcanic glass on his chest in which

he saw all the thoughts and deeds of people. He was the god of the Great Bear pattern of stars in the night sky. He was thought of as a jaguar because jaguars have spotted coats like the night sky and priests wore jaguar skins to represent him. He was in charge of schools and made sure the young got military training.

Tlaloc (meaning the one who makes things sprout) He was the rain god, Tlaloc was shown as a man wearing clouds, a crown

of heron feathers, sandals and carrying rattles to make thunder. He lived with the goddess of freshwater lakes and streams. Tlaloc was greatly feared because he could cause floods and droughts. It was he who set hurricanes and thunderbolts on people.

Chalchiuhtlicue The Aztecs believed that in the history of the world there had been four suns before the one we now see. The forth sun was Chalchiuhtlicue the water goddess.
