LinkedIn Networking 101

Background

• LinkedIn has been around since 2003. It's a social media platform primarily used for professional networking and career development and allows job seekers to post their resumes and employers to post jobs. More than that, however, it is a way to connect and network with people in your industry.

How to Network on LinkedIn

• Applying for a job? Search for the company on LinkedIn, and check to see if you have any connections with people who work there! o 1 st connection means you're already connected. These are folks like your classmates, professors, previous or current supervisors or colleagues, or people you've met in your industry. § Reach out to them and ask them to talk about the position. § Example: "Hi Sarah! How are you? I see that there's a Marketing position opening at your company. Would you happen to have any information on the position, or suggest someone at your company I could talk to about it?" o 2 nd connection means you have another person in common. Maybe this is someone your professor is connected to, or a previous supervisor of your classmate. You can request to connect with them.

§ Reach out to the 1

st connection. § Example: "Hi José! How are you? I'm interested in the Research Assistant position at 23andMe, and it looks like you might know Dr. Samuels, the Head of Research there. Would you be willing to connect us?" o 3 rd connection means you know someone who knows someone who knows this person. You might be able to connect with them, might not. If it's a stretch connection (like you to Mark Zuckerberg!), you might not be able to connect with them. Instead, select the button that says "Follow" them. You'll get updates on what they post or share. § Interact and engage with their posts, if it feels like someone really important to you. § Show excitement about the work they're doing. • Looking for inspiration? Search for someone working in your dream role. Unless they have certain privacy filters, you can pretty much look at anyone's experience on

LinkedIn.

o Looking up someone who works in your dream role, or at your dream company, can be a great inspiration, but it can also be disheartening. Just remember that your journey is your own, and it doesn't have to look like anyone else's. • Have an update on your career? Post it! Just like Facebook, LinkedIn has a "main feed" where you can get updates on your Network's opportunities. You don't have to be active on this main feed. It's not a requirement, by any means. o But if you're proud of a project you've worked on, or a new internship you just got, it's okay to share. Who knows? Someone in your network might notice and reach out to you! • Engaging with others? Feel free to comment on others' posts and uplift them. Don't forget you can be a network connection for someone else.
