E very year the Almanaccelebrates the newest Distinguished Merit cats for the past show year. Many breeders consider this the most prestigious of titles and awards bestowed on a cat. I"m fortunate t o have cats who have earned this title. I attribute this luck to the love of showing that so many Japanese Bobtails seem to possess. Distinguished Merit cats have produced cats who love people, love show- ing and are not easily intimidated by new situations. I commend all the breeders who have worked long and hard to improve their breeds and the cats that helped them! The Distinguished Merit award was conceived in 1987. The list of the first Distinguished Merit cats includes cats whose awards were given years after the y actually attained their last qualifying offspring. Unfortunately, many breed council secretaries and long time breeders were not able to fur- nish information on some of these "pioneers." I would invite anyone who has knowledge of the cats I was unable to track down, to please let us know about these exceptional cats. Alphabetically by breed, the first DM listed is GC, BW, RW Procurlharem Lauren Bacurll, DM,American Curl Longhair. She was bred and is still owned today by Caroline Scott and

Michael Tucker. Caroline reports "Lauren

Bacurll"helps her type on the computer,

answer emails and is still producing kittens.

She earned her title March 20, 1999.

The very first Exotic DM,GC Bryn Mawr

Funny Girl, DM, born in 1975, was not con-

firmed a DM until this past year. Her DM eli- gibility was discovered by Helen Listema and

Barb Brush, who have been auditing the older

Yearbooks to make sure we had accurate infor-

mation on all the early Grand Champions. The dedicated group of Line Chasers (of which ther e are many members) are responsible for identifying almost 20 cats who were eligible f or DM status but were not previously recog- nized. Most of these cats attained eligibility prior to the DM title being insti- tuted in 1987. GC Bryn Mawr Funny Girl, DM, born July 18, 1975, was bred by W erner, Irene and Mike Kachel. "Funny Girl" was second generation from one of the shorthair crosses that brought the shorthaired gene to the Exotic breed. Her father was GC Ol-Ray La Beau of Bryn Mawr and her mother was CH Jeannel Sassafrass, a first-generation Exotic resulting from the marriage between GC, NW Jeannel Old Spice, a blue Persian and Adam"s Rib Moonfire, a cream tabby American Shorthair. Funny Girl was granded by the Kachels and then sold to Dr. and Mrs. Matthew K. Becker after being bred to CH Bryn Mawr Le Baron. This litter, born in 1978, resulted in three grand offspring. Her next two litters bred to GC Prim-Pet Brandy Wine of Jama Kats, DM produced one grand offspring in each litter. Irene Kachel,Funny Girl"s breeder, was surprised when Funny Girl was confirmed a DM. As the DM title was not in effect at that time, no one real- ly paid that much attention to how many grands a cat had produced. T he first Maine Coon DM is CH Sundar Tiffany of Tufpaws, DM. Her breeders were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Voth, now deceased. The owners of "T iffany"were Mark and Fran Bejcek who are responsible for making her a DM, but they are no longer in the cat fancy. They stopped breeding in

1986 when they divorced. Tiffany produced the first two CFA national win-

ning Maine Coon kitties. She w

as the mother of GC, NW Tufpaws Rosette(19th Best Cat, 1982) and GC, GP, NW Tufpaws Pepe Le Peu of Cheyenne

(9th Best Cat in Premiership, 1984). In the Persian divisions, many of the breeders of the first DMs have p assed away. For example, the breeder, Mrs. V.V. Schuh, and owner, Mr. and Mrs. S. Weston, of the Solid Color Division"s GC Skyway"s Gai Doll of Simbelair, DM, have been gone for several years and we were unable to find information on this cat. However, Conni Davis of Catsrealm is still active in the fancy and relates that CH Le Neux"s Hoot of Docia-Dao, DM produced several black smoke Persian grands, the first of which was born a few months before Conni bought "Hoot." Conni states, "I had purchased and was showing this smoke female kitten at the time Hoot was sold to me. The list of the grands she produced were all were smoke females and all were sired by CH Blu- Acr e Kris of Docia-Dao, a colorbred blue." At a later date Connie also acquired "Kris" from the Yoders of Docia-Dao Cattery. Hoot"s grands included GC Docia-Dao"s Bonanza of Catsrealm (1969GC Catsrealm Bienquista (1971GC Catsrealm Berrenda of Nor -Mont (1971GC

Catsrealm Balada of Debut (19721973

Hoot, by the way, was homozygous for the shading gene; Conni did breed her to a shaded cameo male (he carried a solid genebut as usual for Hoot, she had a large litter (always 4 to 6) of all shaded/smoke kittens. The first Parti-Color DM was CH Tao-Lu"s Shalimar of Palmaire, DM, a blue-cream. According to Persian Breed Council Secretary Susan Cook Henry, "Shelly" produced the bulk of her GC offspring when bred to GC Bar-B The Wiz of Mystichill, DM. This is a pair behind so many of our con- temporary Persians. The first Turkish Van DM, CH Santir Candy Kiss of Pairodocs, DM, earned her award on February 6, 1999 when she was almost eleven years old. Her owners, Deborah C. Hayes and Karen L. Hooker, are still in the cat fancy and, to quote Karen, "...a little older, plumper and grayer" (aren"t many of us!). "Candy" was their very first female Turkish Van. She is still alive and doing well! They feel that Candy has made quite an impact on the T urkish Van breed, not only by being the first DM, but also through her con- tribution towards the dilutes in the breed; her offspring and theirs are in breeding programs across the world. "We are very proud of her and her con- tributions," states Karen. The first American Shorthair DM is a rarity in this elite group, a male! He w as GC Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee,DM,bred by Earl and Jo Ann Sandefur (Jo Ann is CFA Judge Jo Ann Cummings). Although CH Apache Peta, DM, bred and owned by Alayne Poeltl, actually accum ulated her qualifying offspring before

Robt. E. Lee, she was not confirmed until

r ecently. Robt. E. Lee was the first American

Shorthair confirmed with this title in CFA, so

he stands as the "first."

Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee was a very prepotent

bo y who produced incredible kittens for the

Sandef Cattery. He was later sold to Margot

Mellies (Miribu Cattery), who also used him in

her e xtensive breeding program. John Philpot (Jo-Ni Cattery) credits Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee as one of the most impor tant foundation males of

American Shorthair history.

Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee"s mother, CH

Sandef"s Ghost, was a gorgeous girl. In "Ghost"s" last litter there were three

outstanding kittens:CH Miribu"s Molly Pitcher, Sandef"s Ulysses S. GrantCFA"s First Distinguished Merit Cats

and Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee. All three kittens developed dramatically. "Ulysses" was shown by Susie Brown in premiership where he granded. Robt. E. Lee and his brother Ulysses, both large males, weighed in at about

15 pounds. Robt. E. Lee produced silvers, of course, but he also gave the cat

fancy dynamic browns and blues of outstanding quality. He produced 18 g rands to earn his well-deserved DM. If you dig back in pedigrees, Sandef"s Robt. E. Lee"s name can be found as a contributing factor to so many of today"s successes. 1 According to breeder and owner CFA Judge Bob Molino, the first seal- lynx Colorpoint Shorthair DM, GC Sanlino Prima Linca, DM, has a pedi- gree that is very similar to GC, NW Sanlino

Mary Queen of Scots, a beautiful seal point

Siamese who was the first to win a NW as both

a kitten and as an adult in the same show sea- s on. They were both out of Bob"s outstanding seal point boy, CH Alasmar Drusus of Sanlino, a UK import who is behind many of the finest

Siamese, Colorpoint and Oriental lines in the

country. Many admit "Prima Linca" was a cat

20 years ahead of her time, as was "Mary."

The breeder of the first Havana Brown DM, Pat Swithart, is still in the ca t fancy but no longer breeding Havana Browns. She admits she still takes quite an interest in the breed. Pat relates that CH Charm"s Dazzle 'M of Bundash, DM was a replacement cat for a female she sold Norma Placchi who would not conceive. "Dazzle" was an adult with approximately 138 grand points when she went to Norma. She did not finish her grand because a white locket developed after a veterinarian took blood from the jugular when checking for FeLV. But being only a Champion did not stop her from producing lovely cats for Norma! The first Distinguished Merit award in the Shorthair Division of the Japanese Bobtail goes to CH Grenouille MosiMosi of Bassetti, DM. There is no doubt that "MosiMosi" contibuted much to the Japanese Bobtail breed. MosiMosi came to Janet Bassetti in 1984 and, unbeknownst to her, was pregnant! Janet delights in telling the story of her surprise single kitten born the 4th of July, who went on to become GC, BW, RW Bassetti"s Saisho,DM,the first male DM and who happens to be the sire of the most grands in either the Longhair or Shorthair Division, with 30 total! Other children and grandchildren of MosiMosi went on to become grands and dis- tinguished merit cats. In fact,MosiMosi and Saisho are great-great grand- mother and great-grandfather of the first

Longhair Japanese Bobtail Distinguished Merit!

GC, GP, RW Kurisumasu Kohana, DM, aka

"Poppy," is that grandchild. GC, GP, RW

Kurisumasu Kohana, DM, was born in December

1992 w

hen the Longhair Japanese Bobtail was still not accepted for championship, and Japanese

Bobtail breeders were awaiting the outcome of

their breed council ballot and the board"s accept- ance of the ne w division. When she was wet and wiggly, I believed she was a shorthair since both parents were shorthairs; when I realized she was a longhair ,the outcome of the ballot became more important! Poppy went on to be the first Regional Winner Longhair J apanese Bobtail kitten and the first double Regional Winner in the same year, an amazing feat since it was the first year of championship competi- tion for the longhairs. She was Second Best of Breed/Division that year in a close race, as she had four less months to achieve her points in champi- onship competition. Not only was Poppy the first Longhair Japanese Bobtail DM, she pro- duced two DM children including the first male Longhair Division DM, GC, BW Kurisumasu Ki-ito, DM, and her granddaughter, GC, GP, RW Kurisumasu Shobi, DM, has 14 grands. In addition to these cats, Poppy is behind nine br eed winners (Best or Second Best of Breed Di

vision. Poppy was always a delight to show and her offspring had thesame sweet disposition. She was spayed at the

age of five and is retired and living the good life as a beloved pet with another retired lady in a small town in Oregon.

GC Jena Tu-Thai, DM, a female, was CFA"s

S econd Best Korat in 1980. She was bred and owned by Jean Soich, who is now retired from cats and living in Palm Springs. "Tu Thai"s"

DM was achieved in 1985. Her other achieve-

ments include Best of Breed in the Midwest

Region in 1979-1980 and 1980-1981. Tu-Thai

is found in many, many Korat pedigrees. Lupracan Mus Tillie of Nufurs, DM was a full (not docked) tailed girl bred by Mary Stewart but owned by Susan and William Nuffer. Susan s tates, "She was a blending of many lines. I bred "Tillie" as I bred all my cats - to enjoy and, if possible, show. I was blessed with sharing

Tillie"s offspring; that was a by-

product of enjoying Tillie. Did she contribute to the greatness of the br eed? Can"t answer that honestly. I can say she was loved and lived a super life and was always cared for in an excellent manner. Even with all the Manx breeders and good Manx queens around at the time, it was a small, fine boned, full tailed, green-eyed, white, finely bred queen that clicked over and over again. The opportunity was available, with a little help from me, in selecting the studs. Tillie rose to the occasion time and time again. The dam"s side is so impor- tant in breeding good MANX (catsTillie was a DAM GOOD Manx!" CH Velva"s Valerie Fair of Tsar Blu, DM, bred by Diana and Robert Doernberg, was given to Donna Fuller after Donna"s first Russian Blue female (from a different breeder) had a disastrous first breeding and had to be spayed. Diana said that she couldn"t use "Valerie" because she was too close to all her other cats, but she thought that she would be a good mate for Donna"s foundation male,GC Hy-Line Dr Zhivago of Tsar Blu. All Diana asked is that she have a kitten back from a future breeding to "Doc."Valerie was not an attractive cat; she was dark and had high ears, a square muzzle and weak eye color. However, she had excellent boning, a long straight pro- file and a fantastic pedigree for the time. The first breeding to Doc produced Donna"s first CFA National Winner with a Tsar Blu prefix: GC, NW Tsar Blu"s Fitzwilliam (later of Velva) who was Seventh Best Cat and Best Shorthair in the 1977 show season. After Donna finished showing him, he went to live with Diana and produced many lovely litters for Diana. Valerie was bred to Doc several times and produced at least a couple of additional grands, one of which was a male named GC Tsar Blu"s Zorian Grey.

Donna tells us tha

t "Zorian" was originally sold to a man in Salt Lake City but after a year, she received reports that he was being mistreated, so she bought him back. She kept looking at Valerie and thinking that she looked like the perfect mate to Zorian, who was very light-coated with good e ye color, wide earset and lovely overall balance. She finally decided to try this mother-son breeding. On Thanksgiving morning of 1978,Valerie gave birth to one of the most important cats in Tsar Blu Cattery"s history: GC, NW Tsar Blu"s Zane Grey,

DM. She w

as retired from breeding in 1982,but by then she had produced many grands including two Shorthair Cats of the Year (GC, NW Tsar Blu

Fitzwilliam and "Zane").

CH Bryric Patchwork of Kitjim, DM, bred by Karen Votava and owned b y Kitty Angell, was the first Scottish Fold Shorthair DM, Her daughter, GC, NW Kitjim"s Briarpatch, DM was the second Shorthair Scottish Fold DM. "Patchwork" was born in 1976, lived to be 18 years old and died still living with Kitty. The first Somali DM, Foxtail"s Shoshone of Purrpots, DM, was a real sweetheart of a cat and an Aby daughter. Won"s Manani of Soketumi, who was 11th Best Cat nationally the year he w as shown. He was a ruddy Abyssinian with the most brilliant color you"ve e ver seen according to "Shoshone"s" owner at the time, Carole D. Dunham, w ho says, "He passed his color onto his daughter. Shoshone, however, l ooked like a bulldog with an overslung bottom jaw. I have no photos of her, since I was then and still am a horrid photographer. I sold her to Sheila Bowers when I went out of cats, but she was unfortunately sterile by that point. Sheila sold her as a pet, the ultimate home for any cat. "She was a fantastic mom. While I had her, 100% of her kittens lived. S he was always bred to Tir-Na-Nog"s Grand Canyon, and all her kittens looked like him with her color and ticking. When Pat had them both, I can"t remember the names of the three grands she produced. When I had them, they produced my two: GC Purrpots Feather River of Tigris and GP

Purrpots."

Carol Haydu owner of the first Sphynx Distinguished Merit, Ms Intrigue Belaranger, DM, bought her from Carylen Spidel. Carol named her "Beautiful Rangers"- all her cats are named after hockey teams. Carol went with another breeder who bought her sister. Carol had second pick of the lit- ter and fell in love with her eyes, and head. Carol thought she was the pick of the litter. Carol never showed "Rangers," as Sphynx were not accepted in CFA at the time. When they were accepted, she was not in show condition, as she was always rubbing her head against rugs or rope poles, which left scratch marks on her. Carol states, "Her first two litters could have DM"d her but it was her third that did the trick. I am happy to have been the one that showed all five (one was given to my friend but I showed her). A difficult time was when one breeder told me that she was a pet and a pet should not be a DM. To me, she is a beauty." Carol also relates there were two special moments in earning the DM award and that one was giving her breeder, Carylen, the DM award. "Carylen cried and listed this as the most precious gift a fellow breeder ever gave her." Another special moment was "when cat number five granded: GC, RW Pretty Bald Avalanche. He did it in three rings, leaving the fourth ring as bonus points. There was a group of us there, all different breeds, and we didn"t know what was the best: the first DM Sphynx or the first three ring baby grand Sphynx. I never set out to DM this cat or any cat for that matter. It was pure luck and accident (litter number two was an oops)."R angers was born in June 2001. She has had five litters, and Carol planned on altering her this last summer. According to Carol she is a won- derful mother and looked after two litters that were not hers. She loves kit- tens and will let older kittens nurse on her at times while she cleans them. She has a very calming nature and sleeps with Carol"s son on most nights. The first Devon Rex DM was a gold-eyed white female, GC Ardee Kathryn S.W. Luoar, DM. "Kathryn"s" sire also became a Distinguished

Merit: CH Kotickee"s Raoul, DM,

bred and owned by Dr. Shally C arlson. Kathryn"s owner, F. Jill

Solly, had been trying to purchase a

female Devon Rex for her male, tak- ing two years to acquire Kathryn from breeder Rosaline Dolak

DeDan. Kathryn was Jill"s founda-

tion female, and her offspring later served as foundations for other

Devon Rex catteries such as Lilac

Hill, Elegance, Razaby and many

mor e. She was Jill"s first show cat and always a joy to show. Jill relates there were trying times when she was shown right after the Cornish Rex class and some of the judges would have to be corrected. CFA had at one time grouped both as Rex cats and they were judged with the same stan- dard. Many times Kathryn was the only Devon in the show, making finals was the only means to acquire her Grand Champion title. Amazingly, she did this in eight shows. She also received a regional award as 11th Best Cat and was Best Devon Rex nationally, in 1988-89. Kathryn earned her DM honors in 1991-92. Three of the grands were from Jill"s first litter of Devons registered in CFA. Kathryn produced many more litters and was seven years old when finally spayed. Like many of our beloved show kitties, she went to a pet home where she could be number one and not upset other cats as sometimes happens with spays. Jill states, "It was a hard time for me to place her as she was a very special Devon in my life, but her happiness was my happiness." There are stories still left to tell of these "firsts," so again I invite any information that can be shared, for another installment! I salute all of the breeders who went before me and to those who follow, I wish the same joy and excitement the breeders and owners of these cats experienced!
