possible grsce a la cooperation de trois organismes, le Centre culturel du Vanuatu,I'Orstom et I'universite nationale
australienne representes respectivement par Ralph Regenvanu, Jean-ChristopheGalipaud et Matthew Spriggs. Les efforts
conjugues de ces trois chercheurs, les aides en nature et les subventions de ces organismes ont seuls permis la tenue de cette rencontre a Port-Vila.Au Vanuatu, de nombreuses personnes ont
favorise, soutenu et aide a I'organisation pratique et au bon deroulement du colloque. Remercions tout d'abord le personnel du Centre culturel de Port-Vila et de I'lnventaire des Sites historiques et culturels du Vanuatu pour leur competence, leur gentillesse et leur disponibilite de chaque instant. Au centre Orstom de Port-Vila, les secretaires et la bibliothecaire ont repondu avec celerite aux demandes nombreuses des74 participants et son directeur,

ont su faire partager aux congressistes leur grande connaissance des arts et de la culture du Vanuatu.A Mangaliliu et Lelepa, tous ont su faire
partager la chaleur de I'accueil traditionnel et cette etape du congres restera dans toutes les memoires. David Luders a activement participe a I'organisation de cette visite.II est impossible de nommer ici tous ceux
qui de prhs ou de loin ont donne de leur temps pour faire de cette rencontre le succes qu'elle a 616. Le Vanuatu et ses habitants ont montre a cette occasion leur capacite et leur int6r6t pour ces rencontres internationales.La chaleur
de leur accueil a et6 pour une grande part dans la reussite de cette rencontre.Jean-Paul Batik, alors directeur du service
de I'lnventaire des Sites n'avait pas menage sa peine pour accueillir tous ces collegues. Son enthousiasme et sa generosite lui avaient valu de nombreux amis parmi les congressistes. Nous regrettons tous son depart brutal le11 octobre dernier. Ce livre lui est dedie.
