General Co-Chairs Message

Paulo S. R. Diniz

COPPE/Poli/UFRJ, Brazil

Ricardo L. de Queiroz

UnB, Brazil

On behalf of the committee members, we would like to welcome you to Rio de Janeiro, the wonderful city, to Brazil and to ISCAS-2011. As everyone knows, the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) is the world's premier networking forum for leading researchers in the highly active fields of theory, design and implementation of circuits and systems. ISCAS 2011, sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and supported by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), will be held for the first time in Latin America. The theme of the symposium will focus on Circuits and Systems for a Sustainable Environment, employing nanotechnology, sensor arrays, mobile processing, and energy-efficient systems, aiming at the natural equilibrium of planet earth. The ISCAS 2011 will include oral sessions, poster sessions, and seven tutorials given by experts on state-of-the-art topics. The special sessions complement the regular program with topics of particular interest to the circuits and systems viiicommunity that cut across and beyond disciplines traditionally represented at ISCAS. In addition to the high- quality technical program, Prof. Marcello L. R. de Campos has invited widely known scientists to present the keynote speeches delivered by Dr. Henrique Malvar, Microsoft Research, Prof. Reiner Hertenstein, TU Keiserslauten and Prof. Luiz Davidovich, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the large number of volunteers who helped shape ISCAS-2011. In particular we should mention Profs. Eduardo A. B. da Silva, Carla Pagliari, José A. Apolinário and Sergio L. Netto who went far beyond their duties to help us. They also deserve the titles of General Chairs. For many members of the CAS Society, this will be their first visit to Brazil and we should warmly welcome you to this huge and unique country. We strongly recommend you to extend your stay and visit at least one of the countless interesting places in the country. Rio itself is impossible to describe in words, and the Brazilian people is probably the most multiracial on earth. The Brazilians are usually friendly and smiling. The Brazilian cuisine is also unique with so much variety originating from the numerous ethnic groups that mingled to form the modern Brazilians. Organizing ISCAS-2011 has been more challenging than we predicted. Starting with the superb job that Prof. Amara did for the ISCAS-2010 in Paris, he put a lot of pressure on us, while being supportive in every possible way to promote our event. Another big challenge has been the unprecedented devaluation of the US dollar and Euro with respect to the Brazilian currency, the Real. Paying most of the bills in Reais and keeping the registration fees within certain boundaries proved to be a difficult task. To make matters a bit more complicate we had to comply with an acceptance rate suggested by the CAS BoG in a year where we did not have the high number of submissions as in Paris. As a result, we had to reject some good quality papers. Nevertheless, such challenges were met with increased and renewed motivation by excercizing the ingenuity we are supposed to have as researchers. Fortunately, UFRJ and IME were true partners and helped us in every possible way. The attendees will witness and judge the results. As ISCAS-2011 in Rio comes to a close, next issues will be held in Korea, China and Australia, a testimony to the truly ixinternational nature of our society. We wish you will take with you memories of wonderful moments spent with us. We hope ISCAS-2011 will be remembered not only for its outstanding technical program, but also by the conference venue and its exquisite beachfront location, the delicious Brazilian cuisine, and the social events. We want you also to remember ISCAS-2011 for the beautiful city that will host it, and the smiling faces of the Brazilian people.

We are looking forward to personally meet you in

Rio.

Technical Chairs Message

Eduardo A. B. Silva

COPPE/Poli/UFRJ, Brazil

Tor Sverre (Bassen) Lande

University of Oslo, Norway

On behalf of the technical committee of the 2011 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS

2011) we welcome you to Rio de Janeiro, the Wonderful

City. The technical program this year consists of regular lecture and poster sessions, special sessions, keynote presentations, live-demos, tutorials, a student paper contest and a special session on confessing mistakes. Its regular technical program spans the traditional areas of interest of the Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society that have been organized in 15 tracks that mostly coincide with the Technical Committees of the IEEE CAS Society. It consists of 115 lecture and 36 poster sessions. In addition to the technical program, we are pleased to have 16 exciting special sessions on a variety of CAS topics. For the seventh consecutive year, ISCAS 2011 is hosting 2 interactive sessions on live demonstrations of circuits and systems. Furthermore, this year we have for the first time a special "confession" session, an interesting forum for the exchange of practical experiences on the development of circuits and systems, where authors describe mistakes they have made so that people can learn from xithem. The technical program was the result of the effort and dedication of many individuals and we would like to express our sincere thanks for everyone that helped to make ISCAS 2011 a fruitful experience for all attendees. Authors from all over the world will be attending ISCAS

2011, where their latest research results will be presented.

The papers originate from 45 different countries, making this symposium one of the best opportunities for interaction among the experts in the area of circuits and systems from around the world. A total of 1335 papers were submitted for the regular tracks, from which 658 high quality papers were accepted. This corresponds to an acceptance rate of 49.3%, in line with current CAS guidelines. For all tracks, including the special sessions, live demos and the confession session, 1411 papers were submitted, from which 732 were accepted. A total of

5110 reviews from all over the world were received, which

gives an average of 3.6 independent reviews per paper. The ISCAS 2011 technical committee made a great effort in the organization of cutting-edge tutorials. This year we have 5 half-day and 2 full-day tutorials offered by leading experts and pioneers from industry and academia. Furthermore, continuing our tradition on keynote presentations, ISCAS 2011 features exciting keynote presentations from high profile experts: Dr. Rico Malvar (Microsoft), Prof. Reiner Hartenstein (TU Kaiserslautern) and Prof. Luiz Davidovich (UFRJ). We want to thank the people who have contributed to the high quality of the technical program. Special thanks go to the 31 Track Chairs and Co-Chairs of the 16 Tracks, the

380 Review Committee Members and 2528 reviewers. We

would like also to specially express our gratitude to the Special Session Chairs, Profs. Sergio Lima Netto and Yehia Massoud, who put considerable effort to coordinate the entire review process for the special session papers. We also thank the Tutorial Co-Chairs, Profs. Georges Gielen and Mani Soma, for putting together an exciting set of topics and speakers, and are also thankful to the Plenary Chairs, Profs. Marcello L. R. de Campos and Juan E. Cousseau for making possible our three high profile keynote presentations. The entire review process was carried out using a professional on-line, web-based review system, which has been essential xiiin achieving the high quality and timely reviews, and for this we thank Tom Wehner, who has in addition been extremely helpful and competent every time we needed his assistance. Finally, we would like to thank the authors for their effort in submitting excellent contributions that have resulted in a high quality and exciting conference. We wish you a technically sound, exciting and enjoyable conference in Rio de Janeiro, the wonderful city. Also enjoy the stunning landscapes, sunshine and the friendly warmthquotesdbs_dbs26.pdfusesText_32
