Le bulletin de la classe de Mme Tran Lundi 25 septembre 2017 Chers parents et élèves, Our class is continuing to work together to practice rituals and routines for the year. We are still asking you to sign your student's agenda to develop good organization skills. France Trip Meeting - Tuesday, September 26 from 5:00 to 6:00 pm Please come to meet with Mme Vang to discuss this school year's trip to France for the 5th graders. The meeting will be in Mme Vang's classroom for 4th and 5th grade interested families. Class breakfast this Friday, 9/29 Everyone is invited to bring a store-bought healthy item to share for our class breakfast. Remember about food allergies: no peanuts items please. MERCI! Fundraising for the Red Cross The Student Leaders are organizing a fundraiser to help the victims of recent natural disasters, wildfires, hurricanes and flood. Bring monetary donations starting now until Friday, Sept. 29. Donations will be sent to the Red Cross. Merci! Classroom Website and E-newsletter Please be aware that newsletters are uploaded to the classroom website and are also accessible from there. Schoology Website We have started to post grades and assignment completion, as well as classroom resources on Schoology. Check out the Parent Guide to Schoology for instructions. French Language Arts We have been working hard on our unit of comic books, learning the different aspects involved in creating a comic book, and planning our own page of comics. We are also working on a descriptive paragraph about our backpacks. Orthographe/French Spelling: Students receive a list of words on Monday. Homework is done in their yellow spiral notebook. Monday (write words in alphabetical order), Wednesday (definitions or sentences) and Thursday (practice). The spelling test is given on Friday. Dictée #1 and #2 were sent home for your signature. Please sign and send back to school. There will be no new spelling list for this week. Only students who need to retake the dictée #2 will have to practice the words. Independent Reading / Monthly Genre Projects 30 minutes of independent reading is part of the daily homework. Students are required to read a minimum of 20 books in French and 20 books in English by the end of 5th grade. 1 French book = 50 pages, 1 English book = 100 pages. Students received a blue Independent Reading Student Booklet where they will start writing in their summaries and responses. Many have turned in their summaries and responses for credit.

By the end of September (or each month), students should have completed 2 summaries in French and 2 in English. The September genre is Comic Books in French, and the project is to create an original comic strip in French. A green flyer with all the details was sent home with details about the project. The presentations for this first project will start this week. Math We reviewed multiplication and learned divisibility rules along with the concepts of prime/composite numbers and square numbers. Students should memorize definitions of all new math terms. We are now working on addition and subtraction of whole and decimal numbers, as well as word problems. We are reminding students to verify their work at all times in order to avoid unnecessary errors. There will be 2 short math tests next week on operations and on word problems involving those operations. Everyone got their IXL name and password to use at home to practice facts and skills. English Language Arts/Social Studies We started learning new academic vocabulary. We will start Social Studies with geography vocabulary. Students have their Readtheory names and passwords to use. Agendas/Planners- Homework: 1. Math homework will be given almost every day. The study link is usually in English and the Math Boxes can be in French or English. 2. Orthographe/French spelling (yellow spiral notebook). Homework will be on Mondays and Wednesdays. Thursday will be a review/practice for the dictée (spelling test) given on Friday. 3. Students should spend 30 minutes of reading each night. 4. English homework will be given once or twice a week, on Tuesday or/and Thursday. (coming soon) 5. Sometimes, your child might need to finish a reading or writing assignment or long-term project at home. Design for LNFI T-shirts The PTO has a fun opportunity available ONLY to 5th graders and their families! Bring your creativity forward and design the 2017-2018 school t-shirts / sweatshirts. Work individually, as a group, as a class or as a whole student body and submit a design that incorporates something about what LNFI means to you, your experience at LNFI, or experiences gained through your days at LNFI. Feel free to use the LNFI motto, mascots, or colors. The only limitation is it must be "appropriate", so the possibilities are limitless. Submit ALL Designs to Monica at monica.brown@lnfi-pto.org by October 13th 2017. All designs submitted will be voted on by other LNFI students, parents and staff. The design with the most votes will go into production for this year's t-shirt sales.
