DIPHTHERIA

In tbt> fall of 192fl a program of immunization again!>t tliph. thcr·ia wa,; initiated. This program has hecn largely confintd to the but within six months about 20,000 pupils were re. ported all having been immunized. At the closing of the school., for summo:r ''acation in Juuc, 1926, it was estimated that in the n(ty.fh•f' communities where the program bad been taker\ up, \1[1· wards of 40,000 J>Upils had been immunized Diphtherta. In the county of Osceola, for example, ninety-eight 1wr· (·ent or the average attl'nclancc at school for tbc whole county, was im. munizerl during the campaign. Other eounties, while not equa]. ing Osceola in percentage, greatly exceeded it in the actual numbers treated. It has been the policy of this department to eMonragc the usc, by the people, of the local medical services, henct• undoubtedly, great numbcr·s of children haYc been im. munized by the family physicians of whom we have no record. 'fbe depnr·tmcnt fec!H that the small expense i.ocurr·ecl in pro,-id. ing free toxin-antitoxit) for the 6rst two hundred pupils in each eommunity, as was done hy the department, perhaps. grt "al~r rlefu1ite practical returns, than an expenditure of a likt• sum could have brought in any other wRy. Jn addition to the materinl supplied, the fur·nished free literature, an•l in many case» a reprcseutative of the department aided the cam. paign by giving addresses.

SMALLPOX AND RABIES

In comparison with other diseases there has been a dispropor· t ionatc number of cttses of smallpox and rabies. In rcgar·d to the former·, with wtccination so readily available, there is no (•xcn"· for· any person eont racting smallpox. 'l'hp experienet• of tlw stntl' has been that sntisfactory vaccination has given almost com· pl<'tc protection !t-om the disease. With these faet8 so it is not surprising that people advocate doing with ([Uaruntine for 8rnallpox nnd suy "let those who want smullpox havl' it, we prot<'Ct ourselves against it by vaccination." J udgiug from the number of cases of rabies among dOlr.> atul other Animals nnd the .pumber o£ anti-rabic treatments that have to be supplied for people who have been bitten, it would seem either to require dogs to be vaccinated against rahit>S or ha\·c more stringent lttws regarding dogs running at large and unmur.:r.lecl. A method adopted in some places when rabies de· \'PIOils. is to luwe a whole county or township declarcil a "eon·

VENEREAL DISEASE WORK

The !,;tate Department of Health has not heen nhh' to tlo all it would have liked to do i.o the control of venereal disease, but it has done considerable. 'rhrough lack of funds it was not pos. sible to contitlUC arsenicals free for· the medirntion of l'enercal cases, but the department has made these uvailablc for cllitics a11d hospitals at tbe lowest possible cost. Encouragement has been giwu local clinics, mHI the dt•partnwnt bas endeavored to locate and follow up all of known in· fection, and bas sought to haYe all infected pcr·sons submit them· sell·es to their physicians for treutment.

OfSTRIBUTION SILVER

lu atcordance with the requirements of the Vcnt'ral law, an effort has been put forth to haYe the use made general of silver nitrate in the eyes of the ucwbom for the pre,·ention of blindness. As a means to that end, ampuls of silver nitrat(' arc now distributed free to all physicians and hospituls doing obstetrical wo1·k. Since this free distr·ibution was bcl!'un there has been a great demand for these ampuls. ;\lauy ncldrcsscs ha,·c been giv1•n to medical su ·i!'tit•s and ng!'ncit•i iuterestcd in public health problems. A very great de11l of liler·R· lure for free distribution has been prepared. 'l'he lellflets on dif ferent diseases already existing were revised while many new ones have been added. A Jist of available literature appears in this report. There bas been an increasing demand for literature and h1-

fol'mation, and in the first three months of 1926, there \\ere i.,. upwards of 50,000 pieces of literature by this department to person!> living in different parts of the state. The Quarterly Bulletins have been published, and fo•· hOme of the numbel'll we have bad hundreds of requests from stall'S other than Iowa, and many requests for copies have come from foreign countries. A news letter bas also been issued every few \fCeks, dealing briefly with some phase of publie health aetivity. Judging from the communications received in regard to these letters, they have been appreciated and have proven helpful.
