Acknowledgments

A collection of this sort is never possible without the combined talents and cooperation of a number of people and organizations. As chair of the Committee to Revise Books for You, I appreciate the opportunity to hereby recognize and thank all of the following: The numerous publishers, through their directors of publicity or mar- keting, who sent us copies of their books to consider. We should rejoice in the mutual benefits we provide each other. The individual members of the committee whooften under pres- sures from greatly strained personal livesdiligently read, selected, and annotated the best of hundreds of new books produced during the past three years. The insights, talents, and extensive time commitment of each member were necessary for the completion of this project. The schools and libraries which employ members of our committee, for their cooperation and assistance with duplicating and mailing, and especially Central Connecticut State University for providing graduate assis*.ants' support. Christine Nybakken and Mary Ann Walters for their tireless record- ing, categorizing, filing, and mailing of books. Gordon Korstange, Dawn Starr, Peggy Thomas, and Patricia Trumbull for filling in at the end. Bob Small, committee chair of the previous edition of this book, for hisinitial guidance, insightful advice, and continuous sympathetic encouragement. Paul O'Dea, Director of Publications at NCTE, for his unfailing support, encouragement, and trust.

Introductiea to the Student

Except for school assignments, most of the reading you do is likely to be for enjoyment. Fiction accounts for the largest proportion of the reading which students (as well as adults) do on their own. But you also sometimes read for informationto get an expert's advice on taking better photographs, for example; to learn how to repair a racing bike; to answer your questions about caring for a pet; or perhaps to learn more about a specific event in history. But even that kind of reading can give you pleasure when you fins: answers to your questions or gain new insights into areas you were previously unaware of. Reading for pleasure was what we tried to keep foremost in our minds as we compiled this collection. We hope that the books described here will, more than anything else, provide enjoyment. Reading should not be a chore. Because there are so many books to choose from, if you start to read ene and find it too difficult, too abstract, or even too simple, then there are usually others you can try.

How This Book Is Arranged

Because many students prefer to read certain kinds of books, we have organized this collection by categories and have arranged them in alpha- betical order. Within each category, the books are listed in alphabetical order by the author's or editor's last name, followed by the title in bold print. So, if you are interested in locating an exciting science fiction novel or a juicy romance, turn to that section of the book and see which authors and titles capture your attention, then read the brief comments that taow. If you already have a favorite author in mind, turn to the back of the collection where you will find an Author Index. You willquotesdbs_dbs27.pdfusesText_33
