ObjectivesoftheprojectSupportTanzaniainthedevelopmentofmultiplebenefitsmapstoinform REDD+safeguardspolicies,executedbyUNEPͲWCMCincollaborationwithTFS,FAOandUNDP:1. Contributeto,andsupportthedevelopmentofenhancednationalscalespatialdatasets,
statisticsandmapsonbiodiversityandecosystemservicesforTanzaniaforthepurposeof informingREDD+policiesandmeasures,notablylanduseplanningandprioritizationof REDD+interventionzones.ThethemesreferredtointheCancunenvironmentalsafeguards, includingnaturalforestandpriorityareasformultiplebenefits(carbon,biodiversity,other ecosystemservices)willbemapped,buildingonandusingtheNAFORMAplotdata alongsideotherrelevantnationalscalespatialdatasets.2. BuildcapacitywithinTanzaniaonspatialanalysisofdatasetsofrelevancetomultiple
benefitsandenvironmentalsafeguardsforREDD+andonapproachestodeveloping informationsystemsforsafeguards.Objectivesoftheworkingsession:

Sevenpeopleparticipatedinthisworkingsession,nominatedforparticipationbyTanzaniaForest Service.Thisincludedallparticipantsofworkingsessionone, exceptoneperson.Theworkshop lastedtwelveworkingdays,13Ͳ29May2013.ThetwofirstdayswerespentinDSM,onconsultations withseniorstaffinTFSandmeetingwithrelevantNGOs.Thegroupworkstartedon15May.Eight daysofthe trainingsessionwerespentinMorogoro,atSokoineUniversityofAgriculture(SUA),and threedaysinDSM,attheofficesoftheTanzaniaForestService.Modeofwork
Theworkingsessionwasconductedwiththefollowingmainelements:Presentationsonnewtasks;
2 Groupdiscussionsonhowtoaddressparticularquestions,andwhatthebestwayof creatingandpresentingcertainmapsmightbe; Workinpairsorteamsofthree,sometimesindividually,onaparticulartask.Incontrastto thefirstworkingsession,wheremostactivitieswerecarried outfollowingatutorial,the secondworkingsessionwerelargelystructuredaroundindependentwork,withguidance fromthefacilitators. InthesecondworkingsessiontheparticipantswerefamiliarwiththeGISsoftwareandthetraining formatcouldmovefromworkingfromtutorialstolessstructuredproblemsolvingactivities.Workingsession
2reliedmoreheavilyongroupdiscussionsonhowtobestprocessandimprove
availabledata,andhowtopresentthemaps.Thiswasfollowedbygroupworktoundertake differentspecifictasksidentifiedfromthediscussions.Taskswereassumedbysmallerteamsor1Ͳ3 people,andcarriedoutto completionbytheseteams.Afewexercisesthathadspecificelementsof interesttotheentiregroupweredonejointly. Thedifferenttasks,whileusingsimilarGIStools,wereassociatedwithdifferentissuesforwhich solutionshadtobefound.Thegroupsworkedtogetherwithfacilitatorswhocirculatedamong groups todevelopapproachesforsolvingtheproblemsthatarose. Thiscollaborativemodeofworkingwasintendedtoleadtogreaterlearning,andenhancethe qualityoftheoutputs,byensuringthatthecompetenceofthegroupwasfullyutilized.The participantsoftheworkingsessionalsodrewontheirnetworksto collectdataforthemapping work. Asinworkingsession1,allworkwasconductedinopensourceGISsoftware(QGIS,SAGAand GRASS),intheXubuntu(Linux)operativesysteminstalledonaliveUSB,whichalsoheldinstallations ofallsoftwarewithnecessaryextensions.TheparticipantskepttheirUSB attheendoftheworking session.TheFAOͲFINprogrammewasofgreatassistanceinpreparingtheseUSBs.Thissetup ensuredthateachparticipantworkedinidenticalOS,andvaluabletimedidnothavetobespenton configuringdifferentcomputers.Mostparticipantsworkedontheirownlaptops,andthe machines weregenerallystrongenoughtoprocessthedataasrequired.Activitiesandoutputs
