In October 2017, history was made in the Middle East. Sophia, a robot designed to learn from human behavior, became the first non-human citizen of any nation when King Salmane decided to grant her Saudi nationality. Was this just a publicity stunt by Saudi Arabia or the first step toward a universal status for robots? It's difficult to say with any degree of certainty what part robots will occupy in our lives in the coming decades. Domestic robots could be the norm, but we might also see robot financial analysts, soldiers and even surgeons. One thing is for certain however, we are on the cusp of a new age where robots, due to their sophistication, can no longer be treated as mere objects. This imperative raises important questions of ethics and liability and promises to bring upheaval to the labor market.

“It"s time to decide which future we want,"

counsels Mady Delvaux, an MEP calling for EU-wide rules to govern the acti vity of robots. Little by little politicians and lawmakers are getting involved. Ideas that have been explored by the foremost minds of our times are now being debated in boardrooms and on senate oors. This is welcome. Despite the very real concerns, we have the opportunity to build together - us and our

AI offspring

- a better future.

Articial Intelligence meets the GDPR

Individuals are becoming more and more resistant to their data being used by large social media companies, and the recent scandal involving Facebook selling access to the data of millions of users to Cambridge Analytica m ight well be a tipping point. While the social media giant is trying to deal with the fallout from the scandal, few have faith in these types of companies to self-regulate. The European Union has, for its part, adopted a new data protection framework in the shape of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Entering into force on May 25th, the GDPR, which aims to put an individual's consent at the heart of data collection, is sure to keep corporations and their counsels busy for years to come.
