XHIBITION

S OF the art of any given time and place have tended to look for unit y rather than variety and to favor the beautiful. As a result, the clashes, puzzles and paradoxes that typify complex cultures - their very lack of unity - hav e bee n les s evident to museum visitors, though these phenomena have had a powerfu l attractio n fo r historians in recent years. Thi s exhibitio n examine s a single art form in a great artistic center dur- in g a glorious era: the book in Isfahan during its time as the Safavid capital. Rathe r than searching for overall stylistic or visual unity, we observe instead th e ways in which history and cultural traditions have caused artistic styles to diverg e and contrast and how these styles have functioned as expressions of differen t communal identities.
