Foreword
Foreword by Baroness Kramer
There are over 10 million people in Great Britain with a disability and we are committed to improving their access to work and leisure. This includes improving access to the UK's railway stations, and this publication will help those delivering station infrastructure improvements to contribute to that aim.Code of Practice Version 04 - March 2015 9

About the Code of Practice
1.Code identifles European and national standards relevant for all passenger train and station operators in Great Britain. Licensed operators, including Network Rail must follow the Code, a condition of their licence, whenever they install, renew or replace infrastructure or facilities. This includes the requirement to establish and comply with a Disabled People's Protection Policy (DPPP), paying due regard to this Code.
mandatory European standards (from the Persons with Reduced Mobility Technical Specifcation for Interoperability) which must be applied when any "major work" is being undertaken; mandatory national standards which must be applied to all other installations, renewals or replacements; and best practice guidance which should be applied wherever possible.

A1. Pre-travel information
Good information is vital. In addition to the same information as anyone else, disabled passengers may need extra information to enable them to undertake and complete their journey in reasonable safety and comfort. A1.Information regarding the level of accessibility
of all stations must be freely available.Operating rules shall be made to ensure that
information regarding the level of accessibility of all stations is available. PRM TSI: 4.4.1This section contains no national standards but
operators ought to refer toHow to Write Your

shall have procedures that include the provision of alternative assistance to PRM during maintenance, replacement or repair of facilities that are for PRM use. B1.The obligations within this section are also
underpinned by statute. Section 248 of theTransport Act 2000 requires operators to
ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the substitute road services allow disabled passengers to undertake their journeys safely and in reasonable comfort. This should include passengers who have suffered an injury that seriously impairs their ability to walk. Financial liabilities can arise if operators fail to meet these requirements.Reference
