It covers all four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - and includes a Pfth element focusing on the candidate"s understanding of the structure of the language. There are four papers: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The overall performance is calculated by averaging the scores achieved in Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Use of English. The weighting of each of the four skills and Use of English is equal. Candidates need to be able to understand texts from publications such as Pction and non-Pction books, journals, newspapers and magazines.

Candidates have to show that they can produce two

dieerent pieces of writing: a compulsory essay in Part r, and one from a choice of three tasks in Part 2.

Candidates need to show they can understand the

meaning of a range of spoken material, including lectures, radio broadcasts, speeches and talks. r4 minutes per pair of candidates, and 20 minutes per group of three candiates

Candidates take the Speaking test with another

candidate or in a group of three, and are tested on their ability to take part in dieerent types of interaction: with the examiner, with the other candidate and by themselves. Each of the four test components contributes to a proPle which dePnes the candidate"s overall communicative language ability at this level. B2 First for Schools gives detailed, meaningful results.
