INTRODUCTION

The

Antigone

of

Sophocles

has attracted

French

drama- tists for centuries. From the

Renaissance

to the present, the translations and adaptations of this play have reflected many of the technical and theoretical changes in

French

drama. Two outstanding twentieth century playwrights, Jean

Cocteau

and Jean

Anouilh,

have borrowed

Sophocles'

plot for their plays. The purpose of this study is (l) to analyze the heroic nature of

Antigone

in the plays of

Sophocles,

Cocteau,

and

Anouilh,
