Research is crucial for improving our ability to diagnose and treat dise ases. During 2018, IdISSC aimed at being

recognized as a procient health-research center, leveraging the talent and experience of their groups that try to deliv

er

brilliant results with scarce funding. Maintaining an active role in communication with external stakeholders, IdISSC

pursued research opportunities to advance our understanding of biology a nd disease, and to promote health. With a new decade rapidly approaching, IdISSC continued aligned with Eur ope"s research objectives. This 2020 vision offered exciting opportunities for research and its application to human health, which crystallized in near 17.86%

international grants awarded and 14 active international projects. The 717 investigators at IdISSC (56% women),

classied by the R1-R4 European ranking, struggled to broaden the imp act of research in their elds. IdISSC contributed to an increasing research literature that critically examines a variety of diseases, with the publication of 655 scientic articles, half of them with leader authorship, over a hundred in the rst deciles of their categories, and showing a gender balance. Working alongside IdISSC scientists, graduate students helped to uncover new knowledge and transform health care through their doctoral thesis, more than 30 read during 2018. The translation of discoveries to patient care is our nal goal. The collaboration of professionals with diverse expertise catalyzes research breakthroughs at IdISSC, shapes future avenues in tre atment strategies, and brings the results of research to patients. Seeking to improve the effectiveness of healthcare with 479 clinical trials that remained active in

2018, the platform SCReN headed by IdISSC promotes collaboration among e

xpert scientists to ensure the relevance of their clinical trial results, and the network RECLIP concentrates on pediatric clinical trials. In transit through hard

economic times, our professionals strive to stay at the leading edge of incorporating those investigation results to guide

tailored therapy and develop standards of practice: based on recent resu lts, IdISSC investigators provided new approaches summarized in 20 clinical practice guidelines.

In this collaborative research center, with 18 groups participating in 13 national networks such as RETICs and CIBERs in

diverse elds (ophthalmology, endocrinology, oncology...), everyone is focused on contributing to high-impact res

earch and trying to apply new discoveries to the study of human health. In developing the strategic plan in 2018, IdISSC reinforced core support units aimed at accelerating research, among

them the Biobank or the Clean Room to name a few. IdISSC is also stimulating innovation by building bridges between

our research laboratories and the academic, non-prot and private sec tors through the participation in the ITEMAS

network and the assistance of the Innovation Unit. IdISSC aims to identify resources and activities that will enable novel

applications to human health, displaying an organization with varied exp erts: biologists, analysts, clinicians, administrative staff.... IdISSC also cares for the societal implications of research. As the scop e of IdISSC research evolves, patient participation is imperative. IdISSC is committed to ensuring that research has the wid est impact possible, sharing results across

scientic communities with the seminar series that prioritized newly emerging groups, as well as with non-scientic

audiences through a range of didactic and outreach strategies such as “ The European Night of Investigators", “The Week

of Science" and “Women and Girls in Science". The implications of research advances must be shared, and IdISSC

has created an important interface between research and society with the forum “Science and Society hand by hand" celebrated for the rst time in 2018, but with a spirit of permanence Since the launch of IdISSC in 2012, research has progressed to become an essential component of medical care with far-

reaching implications for society. IdISSC multiplies efforts to improve human health and, as a highly col

laborative entity that supports cutting-edge science, helps to explore the mutable frontie rs of knowledge.

SCIENTIFIC REPORT2018

The Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos in M adrid was created with the intention of promoting research and planning the scientic activity in line with the areas dened in t he strategic plan.

It consists of the following entities

Its mission is to promote and consolidate the activities of biomedical r esearch from groups within the Institute, building an organization of excellence for the generation of scientic knowledge, oriented to health care practice, and thus, improving th e citizens health through the interrelation of basic and clinical research , integration of resources, the encouraging of innovati on and internationalization, as well as the empowerment and recognition of rese archers and support staff, all underpinned by a dynam ic management, based on continuous improvement and learning. Its vision is to be an organization of scientic excellence with inte rnational visibility, conducting network research, and with a commitment to innovation and technological advance through the developme nt of a sustainable research and the promotion of gender equality and internationalization. The values of the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Clínico a re: accessibility, transparency, dedication to service and respect. Moreover, the groups of interest are the citizens, researchers, participating in stitutions, funding agencies and entities providing services.
