Practical advice for arXivers

If you want to submit one of your publications to arXiv, please note the following. Consider which journals you will submit your article to first. Some journals do not allow publication of preprints on repositories. The SHERPA/RoMEO list includes in- formal guidelines on the policies of individual publishers http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo). an active arXiv author as proof of suitability.

2. The arXiv accepts TeX, LaTeX, pdfLaTeX, PDF, Post-

Script and html file formats.

3. It is usual to wait for a few days after publishing the

article on arXiv before submission to a peer-reviewed journal. This makes it possible to take account of feed- back from other scientists directly in the journal version.

4. It makes sense to publish a corrected version to the

arXiv server after the peer review process. Many pu- blishers allow this, as long as the document is crea- ted by the authors (see publishing contract, policy or

SHERPA/RoMEO list).5. For additional local visibility and long-term archiving at FAU you should also submit the publication to the

OPUS FAU repository and CRIS (Current Research In- formation System). arXiv Overlay Journals arXiv overlay journals (AOJ) are a special kind of journal, which build on the arXiv infrastructure. All articles are compiled di- rectly via arXiv, requiring only a minimum of server resources and technical services. The final journal version is also sto- red in arXiv after passing through the full peer review process which ensures content quality. The journal only manages links and metadata (for example keywords and abstracts) to the articles in arXiv. Proofreading and typesetting are not usually provided as authors are responsible for spelling and layout. AOJ are open access and have very low running costs thanks to the processes described above. For the new AOJ Discrete Analysis, the cost is estimated at about 10 euros per publica- tion. What is arXiv?

arXiv (http://arxiv.org) was created in 1991 as an online repo- sitory for providing preprint papers, primarily for high-energy physics. It is now one of the world's largest open-access re- positories for full-text articles with over one million articles. Most of the around 300 daily publications come from the fields of physics, mathematics and computer science - the latter being the fastest growing areas. arXiv is also used by quantitative biology and finance. For biosciences and life sci- ences, bioRxiv is more specialized (http://biorxiv.org arXiv has the aim of collecting material that is of interest, re- levance and value to its subjects. All articles are therefore moderated by experts in their fields. Inappropriate content, obvious plagiarism and copyright infringement is filtered out during this process.

More than a repository

Primarily, arXiv is a publication server for green open-access publications. Beyond storing documents arXiv also functions as a new publications service. With RSS feeds, email alerts and new submissions lists, arXiv has long been a platform for making publications visible immediately to an appropriate audience. For many areas, such as high energy physics, arti- cles that are also published in arXiv receive five times as many citations as those which are not. arXiv also allows supplements to be added to each article. This can include data records, application examples or pro- gram code. As each article is stored in the arXiv history, it is possible to add new versions of existing articles without losing the older versions. This allows lecture notes to be up- dated or unabridged versions of publications that have been shortened by the publisher to be added. arXiv at FAU Members of FAU download more than 30,000 documents from arXiv annually. This corresponds to place 139 among universities worldwide. Almost 30 articles are posted by members of FAU on arXiv each month. The FAU supports arXiv through a German consortium, which is coordinated by the Technical Information Library (TIB) in Hanover, the Helm- holtz Association and the Max Planck Society. Preprint papers which were published in arXiv can also be up- loaded to the online publication system OPUS FAU to ensure local visibility and long-term archiving.

Storing articles in arXiv provides all the benefits of open ac- cess:

Good visibility through search engines and citation services by indexing the full text All the advantages of digital publishing (no space con- straints and integration of other content) Promotion of research efficiency through prompt dis- cussion of research results

Storing publications in arXiv also has the fol-

lowing benefits: Large sections of the research community can be no- tified automatically and promptly (alerts, RSS feeds, information services) about new submissions.

Lectures or proceedings which are not planned for

publication in journals can be accessed via the arXiv ID. Automatic version control ensures that citations re- main correct even after the article is updated. The service is free of charge for authors and readers. The authors retain exclusive exploitation rights and the legal situation is simplified by Creative Commons licenses.

Legal aspects

arXiv provides four Creative Commons licenses: CC 0, CC BY, CC BY-SA and CC BY-NC-SA. Additional information on the- se licenses can be found at http://de.creativecommons.org/ was-ist-cc/.
