1. Abbreviations are used to save space and time
in communication. They have to be as clear and concise as possible. However, because they may have different meanings depending on the context, they must be used carefully. Where an abbreviation could be misunderstood, the full term should be used.2. While the policy for the use of abbreviations is
the same for both official languages, conventions for the use of abbreviations and the formations of new ones will naturally differ because of inherent differences between the two languages. Whenever possible, however, abbreviations will be identical in both languages.GÉNÉRALITÉS

4. Before using an abbreviation for the first time, it is
important to note that the author must first write the term in full and then insert the abbreviation in parentheses after.
