eThe International Union for Conservation of Nature and NaturalResources (IUCN) was founded in 1948 and has its headquarters inMorges, Switzerland; it is an independent international body whosemembership comprises states, irrespective of their political andsocial systems, government departments and private institutions aswell as international organisations. It represents those who areconcerned at man's modification of the natural environment throughthe rapidity of urban and industrial development and the excessiveexploitation of the earth's natural resources, upon which rest thefoundations of his survival. IUCN's main purpose is to promote orsupport action which will ensure the perpetuation of wild nature andnatural resources on a world-wide basis, not only for their intrin-sic cultural or scientific values but also for the long-term eco-nomic and social welfare of mankind.
Thi s objectiv e ca n b e achieve d throug h activ e conservatio n pro-grammes for the wise use of natural resources in areas where theflora and fauna are of particular importance and where the land-scape is especially beautiful or striking, or of historical, cultural orscientific significance. IUCN believes that its aims can be achievedmost effectively by international effort in cooperation with otherinternational agencies such as UNESCO and FAO.
