Overview

Welcome to College Algebra ² a challenging course designed to prepare you for advanced

coursework in precalculus and statistics. College Algebra is also a stepping stone to the prerequisite

mathematics required by many universities. This course requires your best effort every day. I will do my best to make complicated mathematics easy to understand. I expect you to do your best by honoring the course with hard work, integrity, and teamwork.

Khan Academy

Many students succeed when they learn at their own pace, are motivated to challenge themselves, and have access to high-quality resources. Khan Academy provides a free math tutor available to you 24/7. Khan Academy can be a useful tool to help you take the reins of your own

learning, especially when you GRQ·P OMYH MŃŃHVV PR M PXPRU RU PHMŃOHU MP MOO PLPHVB When you GRQ·P

fully understand a math concept or miss a few classes and want to catch up, you can search for relevant videos or exercises to get the instruction you need. When you want to fill in any previous gaps in your learning, you can move through appropriate grade- or subject-level missions or search for specific skills you need help on. In addition, if you just want to explore beyond your regular coursework, you can try other math missions, or even explore the wonders of computer programming and art history! The students in College Algebra have diverse levels of comprehension and pre-existing math knowledge, despite being placed in the same class. Missions are individualized math experiences within Khan Academy which are grouped by specific grade levels and subject areas. Everyone will start with the Algebra II mission warm-up in order to assess your current skill level and to establish a baseline for Khan Academy. .OMQ $ŃMGHP\·V MGMSPLYH VRIPRMUH MQG LQVPMQP feedback can guide you on your individual learning path. This allows you to practice the skills, understand which ones you have truly mastered, and where you need to focus more effort.

Grading

Formative Assignments = 20%of overall grade. Formative assignments include homework from time spent and points earned on skill practice within Khan Academy as well as group activities in class. Summative Assignments = 80% of overall grade. Summative assignments include points earned from mastery sections within Khan Academy, classroom presentations, individual quizzes, and individual tests.

Homework

The homework policy is simple: spend 20 minutes on Khan Academy outside of class time each day class meets. A typical week includes having class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. So you are expected to spend 20 minutes working on your missions and skills on those days. Khan Academy keeps track of your progress both in terms of points and time spent. Simply logging on and not completing missions or skills will not count as completed homework. Failure to spend time on homework will result in mandatory assignment to Explorer Period, Wednesday morning, or time after school.

Honor Code

The Hudson High School Code of Conduct is committed to encouraging, promoting, and upholding individual and collective academic integrity. Cheating, plagiarism, and deliberate deception are strictly prohibited. Violations of the Honor Code will result in severe consequences.

For a violation on a formative assignment, a student will receive a zero and an in-school suspension.

For a violation on a summative assignment, a student will receive a 33% grade reduction and two days of in-school suspension. Subsequent violations of the Honor Code may result in out-of-school

suspension, expulsion, loss of course credit, loss of leadership roles in the school, or loss of college

recommendation letters.

If you need additional time to get caught up due to excused absences, do not hesitate to talk to or email Mr. Schuch. Mr. Schuch is very flexible when students

are respectful, responsible, and act with the utmost integrity. If you are ever unsure about what you
