Compiler historian

  • Who wrote the compiler?

In 1951, Grace Hopper wrote the first compiler, A-0 (www.byte.com).
A compiler is a program that turns the language's statements into 0's and 1's for the computer to understand..

  • Conceptually, a compiler operates in phases, each of which transforms the source program from one representation to another.
Often, some of the phases may be grouped together and the intermediate representation between the grouped phases need not be explicitly constructed.
  • The achievements of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, which include, most notably, the invention of the compiler, cemented her place at the forefront of the computing revolution that began in the early 1940s.
Compilers have a long history dating back to the early days of computer development. Grace Hopper, a computer programming pioneer, created one of the first compilers in the 1950s. Here A-0 compiler converted symbolic mathematical code into machine code that could be executed by a computer.
Corrado Böhm developed a language, a machine, and a translation method for compiling that language on the machine in his PhD dissertation submitted in 1951.Context-free grammars and Parser generatorsCross compilationDiagnostics

The term compiler was coined in the early 1950s by Grace Murray Hopper. Translation was viewed as the “compilation” of a sequence of machine- language subprograms selected from a library. One of the first real compilers was the FORTRAN compiler of the late 1950s.
Craterus the Macedonian was a Macedonian historian, who produced a compilation of fifth century BC Athenian inscriptions.

4th century Roman historian and official

Eutropius, scholarly abbreviated Eutr., Eutr.
Brev.
or Eutrop., was a Roman official and historian.
His book Breviarium Historiae Romanae summarizes events from the founding of Rome in the 8th century BC down to the author's lifetime.
Appreciated by later generations for its clear presentation and writing style, the Breviarium can be used as a supplement to more comprehensive Roman historical texts which have survived in fragmentary condition.

French historian (1810–1883)

Henri Martin was a French historian, who was celebrated in his own day but whose modern reputation has been eclipsed by that of his contemporary, the equally passionate Jules Michelet, whose works have often been reprinted.
After publishing a few novels, Martin devoted his life to the study of the history of France, writing Histoire de France, a formidable work in 15 volumes (1833–1836).
He later brought the history down to 1789 in the 4th edition, and received from the Institut de France 20,000 francs as a prize in 1869.
The Avenue Henri-Martin in Paris is named after him.
