Cytology vial

  • What is a liquid cytology?

Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a new method of preparing cervical samples for cytological examination.
Unlike the conventional 'smear' preparation, it involves making a suspension of cells from the sample and this is used to produce a thin layer of cells on a slide..

In liquid-based cytology, the brush head of the device is immersed in a vial of fixative solution where it is vigorously rotated several times to ensure release of the cells collected (Fig. 26.4). The device is then removed from the vial.
The Novaprep(®) Vial Test adequately preserves HPV DNA and is suitable for HPV testing with HC2 if cellularity is satisfactory.

How do I transport a preservcyt solution vial?

Do not detach the head of a broom-type collection device and place the head into the vial or leave the collection device standing in the solution.
When transporting a PreservCyt Solution vial containing cells, make sure the vial is tightly sealed.
Align the mark on the cap with the mark on the vial to prevent leakage. (See Figure 1.) .

How do you test a cytology specimen?

Testing schedules may vary.
Vial with PreservCyt® solution, ThinPrep® vial; vial with CytoRich™ fixative, SurePath™ vial An anal-rectal cytology (ARC) specimen is collected using a swab (Fisher Scientific Catalog No. 22363173; LabCorp PeopleSoft No. 123926).
Moisten the swab in tap water and insert as far as possible into the anal canal.
