Cytology sample preservation

  • After a biopsy sample (sometimes called a specimen) is removed, it is usually put in a container with a mixture of water and formaldehyde (formalin) or some other fluid to preserve it.
  • If the sample is to be processed immediately, it is better not to use preservatives, but to keep it in several 10-ml red top tubes.
If it is going to be several hours or longer before the sample is processed, and ice is not available, it can be preserved with alcohol, but the cytology will be inferior.
A cytologic sample should be preserved in CS-GCP as soon as possible after collection. Ideally this should be carried out in the clinic where the sample is collected. Once an unpreserved sample becomes degraded it will be unsatisfactory for further processing and examination.
Apr 20, 1989Cytological detail was well preserved in a variety of samples including fine needle aspirates, urine, and bronchial brushings.Three dimensional.
Immediately, after the procedure is finished, this rinse fluid should be added to the Cytolyt® (preservative) vial or Cytolyt® should be added to the rinsed fluid to fixed/preserve the material. The minimum CytoLyt® to sample ratio should be 1:3.

Why is slide preparation important in cytology?

For preservation and transport of non-gynecological cytology specimens.
It greatly reduces the impact of blood and mucus from interfering with the examination of diagnostic cells in thin-layer cytology preparations.
CellSolutions’ slide preparation method improves specimen adequacy and cell presentation.
