" Maximum intensity projection (MIP) and minimum intensity projection (MinIP) are volume-rendering techniques in which suitable editing methods are used to define the volume of interest (VOI). All of the CT image data set may be used, or the volume may be confined to a region of interest (ROI).
The primary clinical application of MIP is to improve the detection of pulmonary nodules and assess their perfusion. MIP also helps characterize the distribution of small nodules. In addition, MIP sections of variable thickness are excellent for assessing the size and location of vessels, including the pulmonary arteries and veins 1.
MIP imaging was invented for use in Nuclear Medicine by Jerold Wallis, MD, in 1988 at Washington University in St. Louis, and subsequently published in IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. In the setting of Nuclear Medicine, it was originally called MAP (Maximum Activity Projection).
