Education in Wales: Our national mission
Introduction Education in Wales is changing The prospects and life chances of our young people are improving thanks to our shared national mission of education reform It is changing for the better thanks to the hard work of thousands of teachers school staff headteachers and education partners across the country |
Schools in Wales follow a National Curriculum which is very similar to England's, except for extra sections which deal with teaching Welsh.
The Curriculum covers what children must be taught, with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy.
Education in Wales is devolved, this means the overall policy and regulations are set by the Welsh Government.
Education is free in state schools in Wales and the Local Authority is responsible for providing education in the area where you live.
Main points.
There were 588,000 schoolchildren and students in full-time education (aged 5 years and over) in Wales on census day.
This represents 19.9% of usual residents aged 5 and over.
The study by the Education Policy Institute found children in Wales did as well as or better than their peers in England until the end of primary school.
But by the time of GCSEs at the age of 16, those in England were more likely to get grade C or above.
