The 2022 season is a landmark in the history of the FIA World Endurance Championship. Back in 2012, the idea of reviving the World Endurance Championship appeared unrealistic. Ten years later, the WEC has risen like a phoenix from the ashes as is shown by the unprecedented number of competitors this season: 39! But the bumper grid is not the only reason why this is a watershed season. At the 1000 Miles of Sebring, the FIA WEC introduced a 100% renewable fuel produced by TotalEnergies: Excellium Racing 100. This new fuel, which cuts CO2 emissions by at least 65% over its life cycle compared to a traditional fossil fuel, will be used throughout the season. With recent announcements of future Hypercar programmes by Cadillac, Ferrari, Porsche and others, all the buzz is about 2023, but with the depth and quality of the 2022 eld, including many competitors already preparing for season 11, race fans are sure to enjoy an enthralling race.

TOYOTA'S QUEST FOR NUMBER FIVE

For the second year of the Hypercar era, Toyota Gazoo Racing once again takes on Alpine Elf Matmut and Glickenhaus Racing. The Japanese manufacturer has upgraded the GR010 Hybrid slightly to improve its chances of picking up a fth Le Mans win on the bounce. It has opted for different front/rear wheel sizes and made minor bodywork adjustments to maintain optimum airow. Last year, both Toyota cars experienced fuel pump problems on the Sunday morning. Formidable teamwork by the pit crews prevented the worse then, but it showed that the outcome of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is never cut and dried. Alpine Elf Team will be banking on such uncertainty, plus optimum preparation, to upset the applecart this June. The French marque has embarked on its second season in the Hypercar class. Last year, its reliability propelled it to six podium spots in six races. The team led by Philippe Sinault, 2021 Spirit of Le Mans, has worked hard over the winter on the A480-Gibson"s fuel tank and consumption to get closer to Toyota. The two Glickenhaus 007 LMH challengers of Glickenhaus Racing nished fourth and fth last year, surprising many an onlooker with their reliability. The game of cat and mouse played with Alpine kept spectators on tenterhooks. Team owner and former lm producer James Glickenhaus is more determined than ever to pursue his dream of victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

RECORD LMP2 FIELD

A bumper 27-car eld will compete in the LMP2 class - a record! Many teams and drivers will be using this 90th staging of the event to acquire experience before stepping up to the Hypercar class in 2023. The legendary Team Penske and AF

Corse are two prime examples.

Team WRT will be back to defend its crown with a three-pronged attack, meanwhile eight-time world rally champion Sébastien Ogier will be on the grid in the #1 Oreca entered by Richard Mille Racing Team. He will be partnered by the #47 Oreca and Katherine Legge in the #99 Porsche for LMGTE Am outt Hardpoint Motorsport, the race will feature three mixed-gender line-ups. This is the latest step towards greater inclusivity in motorsport.

PORSCHE AND CHEVROLET CORVETTE OUT FOR REVENGE

Like last year, the LMGTE Pro class will see Ferrari, Porsche and Chevrolet Corvette battle it out on the racetrack. To retain its title, the #51 Ferrari 488 GTE Evo elded by AF Corse will have its work cut out to see off the challenge of the Porsche GT Team"s 911 RSR-19s and Corvette Racing"s C8.Rs. A closely-fought contest is almost inevitable in LMGTE Pro. In 2021, the FIA World Endurance GTE Manufacturers" Championship was won and lost in the closing 15 minutes of the season"s nale, the 8 Hours of Bahrain. Like Porsche, Ferrari and AF Corse will be joining the Hypercar class in 2023. With that in mind, a Le Mans win would be the ultimate condence booster.

A HOLLYWOOD STAR IN LMGTE AM

The LMGTE Am class will also be a three-way tussle, but here it will be Aston Martin taking on the might of Ferrari and Porsche. With twelve 488 GTE Evos among the 22 cars on the grid, Ferrari will have a clear numerical advantage. After Paul Newman and Patrick Dempsey, another Hollywood star will be looking to add his name to the 24 Hours of Le Mans roll of honour. German-born Irishman Michael Fassbender, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2016 for his portrayal of Steve Jobs, will take the wheel of a Porsche

911 RSR-19 for Proton Competition. After two seasons clocking up experience in

the European Le Mans Series, Fassbender will shift up a gear to full his dream of competing in the French endurance classic.

Lilou WadouxAt the 24 Hours of Le Mans, women and men compete on an equal footing. Since 1923, 63 women have started the race, including 27 all-female line-ups. Odette Siko and Marguerite Mareuse were the pioneers when they took to the grid in 1930. In 2022, the grid will feature three mixed-gender line-ups and one all-female trio.
