Abstrakt

Modularity in the production of furniture made from plastics in the Czechoslovakia of the 1970s (diploma thesis master degree), Department of Art History FF UP, Olomouc 2020.

Thesis supervisor:

In the 1960s, the world design of furniture was strongly influenced by the involvement of plastics in the furniture industry and human intervention in space. These two key aspects shaped the emerging formal style of the world post-war design. The new expressiveness was connected to the emerging theoretical and philosophical trends in the field of architecture, urbanism and residential space, fascinated not only by space flights, but also by the speed which made the vision of the future everyday reality. The Czechoslovak Republic, as the westernmost country of the Eastern block, had a unique geopolitical position in the post-war bipolar world order: on the one hand, there was the Soviet directive binding of the, on the other hand, there was also the geographical proximity to western countries, such as Italy or Austria, developing a progressive design. This contradictory position is one of the symptoms which imprinted somehow the form of the domestic furniture production. In the early 1970s, the Czechoslovak furniture industry entered the phase of its own chemicalisation by the planned development of polystyrene governement (in function 19681975)/ is thus a fundamental breakthrough in the development of Czechoslovak furniture production in the material base and

These models depict oscillation of domestic production between the mass export production of furniture and the effort to reflect western progressive trends. In some way they also reflect contemporary trends in the development of residential space theories, progressive architectural visions and contemporary popular culture.
