Die Jury vergab drei Hauptpreise und acht Anerkennungen für Pro- jekte im ganzen Alpenbogen. Dieses Het €ellt die Fülle Bauherren inspirieren und sie ermutigen, gegen den Kli- mawandel und für die Berge zu bauen.

Sesing good examples

For the third time, the Swiss Confederation and the Prin- cipality of Liechtenstein present the ÒConstructive AlpsÓ Architecture Award. As in 2010 and 2013, the Award hon ours refurbished and new buildings in the alpine region which serve as examples of ecology, building culture, so- ciety and economy. Thus the Award is a hands-on contribu- tion to the implementation of the Alpine ConventionÕs ac tion plan on climate change in the Alps. The competition is organised by the Federal Osce for Spatial Development, the Environmental Office of the Principality of Liechten c ein, the University of Liechten c ein and the Internation al Commission for the Prote s ion of the Alps, CIPRA. In total, 360 projects were entered, which is roughly the same number as in previous years. This shows that re- fonsible concrusion is not a short-term trend. The jury has awarded three main prizes and eight commendations for buildings in the entire alpine region. This publication presents an abundance of good proje s s and, in conjunc- tion with the exhibition, it makes them known around the world. May it inspire architects and principals alike, and may it encourage them to build in favour of the mountains and with climate change in mind.

Die er!e Erkenntnis: Zahlen

Nach Reisen kreuz und quer durch die Alpen, nach

gigem Diskurs heisst die erste Erkenntnis der Jury: Das recht neu konstruiert werden, ist in der Baukultur des Kollegen in Maribor ebenso wie die im Berner Oberland und im Trentino. Indeed, how uncomfortable, dismal and expensive is all this going to be? And is it any consolation to know that, thanks to climate change, Þgs will grow and lemons ßour ish north of the Alps?

Turn down the heating

Pro-active believers in the future will now respond: Wait a minutes Our ship has only one problem, its course. We are the ones in charge of minimising the causes of climate change and taking control of the shipÕs rudder. In the Alps between Ljubljana and Nice, for instance, pri- vate households use as much energy as all the cars, heavy goods vehicles and trains. Heating oil, natural gas and coal, burnt to provide energy to heat and cool rooms, emits CO" into the atmo#here with negative results. Too many houses are energy-guzzlers because they were built at a time when climate change and energy problems were !ill pra$ically unknown. So, let us con!ru$ new eco-friendly buildings and, in particular, renovate the old ones properly. The people living in them should use less or even be%er no energy at all for heating and cooling.

Everything is going to be alright

Many people in the con!ru$ion indu!ry approve of

this optimism. Their positive raison dՐtre is solving prob- lems and then building the future. That might well be an important reason, as well as the generous prize money of 50,000 euros, why house builders, architects and en- gineers have submi%ed work and participated since the very !art of ÒCon!ru$ive AlpsÓ. The 360 entries in 2015 illu!rate what builders and those who commission the proje$s are capable of doing. If all buildings in the Alps were repaired like this wide and varied range of refurbish- ment proje$s, we would be half way to our goal. And if new buildings were con!ru$ed in the same way as the ones the jury visited in the second round, then the Environ- ment Mini!ers in the alpine region could say in front of the camera ÒWe have achieved our goal, the Alps are an exemplary region for climate prote$ion.Ó And, if the dra- matically increasing tra&c in and through the Alps was halved, because we travelled by bus or train, went on foot or just stayed cosy in our living-rooms, we would exceed our objectives. In brief: a climate-friendly life is feasible, it is beautiful, it is upbeat and it is also payable. That is the mo! important message ÒCon!ru$ive AlpsÓ wants to communicate.

The fir€ insight: figures

After travelling back and forth through the Alps, re- viewing the technical documents and day-long discussions, the juryÕs Þr! insight was: the skill with which buildings are refurbished and newly built today has become an in tegral part of building culture in the whole of the alpine arc region. Vorarlberg builders might have had a head !art, but now their colleagues in Maribor or Bernese Oberland or Trentino have caught up.
