ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGCHAIRMAN'S REPORT
It is with pleasure that, as Chairman of the Board of Athletics WA (AWA), I report on the activities of AWA over the last 12 months. In preparing this Report I had cause to read again my Chairman"s Report from the 2016/2017 Annual Report. In that Report I expressed my view that one of the biggest issues facing the sport in Western Australia was the need for all participants, whether they be athletes, coaches, officials or parents of athletes, to focus on what is best for the sport rather than what is best for them individually or their particular discipline. Regretfully, events over the last 12 months indicate that message has not sunk in and, realistically, people"s ability to grasp that basic concept has gone backwards over the last 12 months. However, there were numerous positives over the last 12 months including the following: (a) In conjunction with Little Athletics Western Australia (LAWA) through the Community Athletics Council, the continuing progress of the One Sport concept. Be in no doubt that One Sport is the must achieve goal for the future of the sport both in Western Australia and nationally; (b)The return of the Jandakot Airport Track Classic after a one year hiatus due to last year"s Nitro Series.
Once again, the Jandakot Airport Track Classic will be the competition highlight of the 18/19 season. My
sincere thanks on behalf of you all to Dave Van Der Walt for his continuing support of athletics in this
State particularly the Jandakot Airport Track Classic; (c) The continuing collaboration between AWA and LAWA in maximising opportunities for the sport acrossall ages. Our Board and staff have a very constructive relationship with the Board and staff of LAWA; and
(d) The track and field achievements of our athletes as set out in the CEO"s Report. One matter constantly at the forefront of the Boards strategic planning is to shore up the financial position of
AWA. The last few years have been quite remarkable in the stability of AWA"s finances in light of the general
economic climate and the sport"s hand to mouth existence. Credit for that must go to our CEO (and his team)
who runs a very tight ship. I endorse the CEO"s thanks to our long term partners and sponsors as referred to in
his Report. Finally, a thank you to our CEO and his team who continue to work diligently in the administration and promotion
of our sport. It is my (and the Board"s) fervent hope that the next 12 months will see all the cogs of the various parts of the
sport of athletics in Western Australia working cohesively to achieve outcomes that everyone contributes to and
can be proud of.Mal J Halford

been received from Louise Soia which had been unanimously supported by the board and he welcomed L. Soia
to the board. He also announced that Teresa Blackman had contacted him earlier that day to advise that she
would not be standing for the board again and thanked her for her input over the previous two years.6. Advice of the elected Office Bearers of the Board (Chairperson and Vice Chairperson)
The Chairman advised that he was half way through his four year tenure as Chairman and K. Botha"s term of
two years as Deputy Chair had expired in accordance with the current constitution. The Chairman advised that T.
Lyons had nominated for the position and he had been appointed at the earlier board meeting.7. Election of Auditors and Agree to Remuneration
The Chairman asked the CEO to comment on the current position and he advised that Francis A. Jones had been
the auditors for many years, were familiar with the systems in place and had provided a quote of $3800 (exc GST)
to continue. It was moved T. Blackman and seconded M. Bechta that they be reappointed. Agreed unanimously.
8. Resolution to:
a. Repeal the current Constitution of Athletics WA; and b. Adopt as its new Constitution the attached ConstitutionThe Chairman updated the meeting on the extensive process of adopting the new constitution to satisfy the
statutory requirement of the Associations Incorporation Act that included appointing an independent consultant
and the consultation with the membership. He also outlined the voting requirements in adopting the constitution that required agreement from ¾ of those
members present. The Chairman proposed that the old constitution be repealed and the new one adopted and L. Glass moved that
motion which was seconded by D. Van der Walt and passed unanimously.9. General Business
9.1 C. Shoya suggested that the invitation to the Clubs meetings should be by personal email to the delegate
and also placed on the website to inform all club members to ensure the club was represented. Mrs Zohya also
requested the result of the recent survey be posted on the website.9.2 L. Glass advised that recent action from the WAOC was to protest at the lack of progress of the sport in WA.
9.3. In response to Mr Glass" comments, D. Stanton expressed the view that Mr Glass was not representative of
all the officials as he had not surveyed them for their input or sought it verbally.9.4 L. Soia commented that she thought the Sunday competition the previous week had been most successful
and that everyone needed to be mindful that the sport was for the athletes and not about the officials and clubs.
9.5 B. Kernaghan advised the meeting of the excellent promotional support the Masters received from
announcer Jeff Smith on Capital Community Radio 101.7 FM.There being no further General Business the Chairman thanked the visitors for their attendance and the
meeting was closed at 7.05pm.8ATHLETICS WA9
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S REPORT
On reflection, the past 12 months has seen some major achievements on and off the athletics track. Sophie White provided the highlight of the Australian Junior Championships dominating the under 18 sprint events winning the 100m and 100m hurdles. Her100m hurdles time of 13.14s equalled the under 18 Australian record which was
held by Olympic Gold Medallist Sally Pearson. From a whole sport point of view, this year heralded in the first ever Strategic Plan for Athletics in WA incorporating both Little Athletics and Senior Athletics that will facilitate greater collaboration than ever before.LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE
Formed in 2012 the Community Athletics Council, with the continued support of the Department of Sport, is on the verge of achieving its original objective of bringing the sport together with the appointment of an independent consultant to conduct an Organisational Review of the sport. With the boards of both Little Athletics and Athletics WA endorsing this Review, it is hoped this will eventually
facilitate the formation of one athletics body coordinating the sport across all ages. This development will result in the cessation of the Council and I would like to personally thank all past and
current members of the Council and my Little Athletics WA (LAWA) counterpart Vince Del Prete, for their
contribution in assisting us to reach this stage.COMPETITION AND EVENTS
The highlight of the competition calendar was the return of the Jandakot Airport Track Classic on 13th January
where Australia"s best athletes prepared for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April. Courtesy of the
support of board member David Van der Walt"s Jandakot Airport, athletics fans were again able to witness top
level action in idyllic conditions at the best facility in the country. Crowd favourite and Olympic champion Sally
Pearson paired off against Brianna Beahan with Pearson winning in a time of 12.73. Kurtis Marschall, who has
relocated to WA to join Alex Parnov"s squad, won the pole vault in a height of 5.78m to win the competition as
well as qualify for the IAAF World Indoor Championships.A new event that proved most successful was the inaugural Westrac Bunbury Geographe Gift that enabled us to
take Professional Running to a regional area and the athletes participate in a carnival atmosphere.HIGH PERFORMANCE
Under the direction of Athletics Australia, the underpinning arm of the high performance program that Athletics
WA has provided in recent years has now been transferred to WAIS with the appointment of Todd Faulds.
Our involvement will continue through the Prime Emerging Athlete Program that focuses on strength and
conditioning and personal development of our most talented young athletes and I would like to thank Bo Szalek
from Prime Motion & Control for his commercial support of this program.COMMERCIAL This area continues to be our biggest challenge with the sponsorship market so competitive. We are indebted to the Department of Sport and Healthway as our long-term partners for their on - going
support.I would also like to thank Jandakot City, Venueswest, Front Runner Sports, Seven West Media, Radio 6PR and
Keep on Running for their support over the past year.WORKFORCE
This year we welcomed Shane Ellis who joined us as Development Officer who together with StephenStingemore and Sharon Brown form a small but enthusiastic team who are committed to delivering our sport to
athletes of all abilities and ages.I take this opportunity to thank the Board for their contribution over the past year and once again focusing on
the governance of the sport. As always, the final salute is to our reliable and ageless officials who continue to provide the opportunity for all
our members to compete. I thank you all for your untiring efforts and look forward to enjoying your company
next season.Wayne Loxley
