Foreword

The publication of the proceedings of the CIHEAM MedForum 2018 entitled "Research and Innovation: Tools for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security" comes at a time when the world is plunged into an unprecedented crisis. At this point in time, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused lots of casualties and the socio- economic fallout foreshadows a serious downturn in the living conditions of millions of people in our region. Among the most fragile are the vulnerable populations in rural and agricultural areas, who are already suffering from the hazards of climate change, the depletion of natural resources and unequal development.
