The Catalog

The 2007-08 University of Colorado at Boulder Catalog contains a summary of campus facilities, programs, and services; descriptions of colleges, schools, and individual departments; and degree requirements, course descriptions, and faculty listings as of December 2006. Students should refer to the degree, major, and certification requirements listed at the time they formally enter a program. For additional information, students should consult their dean's office. Because the catalog is compiled well in advance of the academic year it covers, changes in programs, policies, and the academic calendar may occur. Up-to-date information may be obtained by consulting departmental advisors, checking departmental bulletin boards, visiting the onlineSchedule Planner ( plus.colorado.edu/ planner ) and the catalog website (www.colorado.edu/catalog), and reviewing registration materials distributed each semester. All catalog information is subject to change without notice or obligation. Additional catalogs may be purchased for $5 (plus shipping and handling) through the CU Book Store, phone

Statement on Diversity

At the University of Colorado at Boulder we are committed to building a campus community in which diversity is a funda- mental value. People are different and the differences among them are what we call diversity - a natural and enriching hall- mark of life. Diversity includes, but is not limited to, ethnicity, race, gender, age, class, sexual orientation, religion, disability, political viewpoints, veteran status, and gender identity/ expression. A climate of healthy diversity is one in which people value individual and group differences, respect the perspectives of others, and communicate openly. Diversity is a key to excellence in education. CU-Boulder is committed to enriching the lives of our students, faculty, and staff by providing a diverse campus where the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and perspectives is an active part of learning. - from the Guidelines for Diversity Planning The University of Colorado does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orien- tation, or veteran status in admission and access to, and treatment and employment in, its educational programs and activities. The university takes action to increase ethnic, cultural, and gender diversity, to employ qualified disabled individuals, and to provide equal opportunity to all students and employees. The Department of Equal Opportunity (DEO) offers a variety of services to all faculty, unclassified administrators, professional exempt and classified staff, students, and visitors to CU-Boulder. Services are re- lated to providing equal educational and employment opportunity, and physical and programmatic access to the Boulder campus community. The DEO assists with creating and implementing plans and practices that will actively seek out individuals to include those who traditionally have been excluded from the work force to be included in employment and admission pools. The department serves as a clearinghouse for information regarding hiring practices for the University of Colorado at Boulder. The department ensures compliance with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and all subsequent federal and state civil rights laws and regulations. Welcome from the Chancellor

I want to thank youfor your interest in the University of Colorado at Boulder, and to those of you who will be attending CU-Boulder this year - Welcome to our campus community. At CU-Boulder, we are dedicated to providing you with a wide variety of opportunities. These range from Residential Academic Program classes in your own residence hall, to working on sus- tainable engineering solutions for basic services in Africa. This range of experiences invites you into the classroom in the broadest sense of the word - in essence, "the classroom of the world." Here are some of the opportunities available at CU-Boulder. • You may decide to enroll in a combined bachelor's and master's program, so that you can earn your master's degree earlier while participating in research and taking courses not usually available to undergraduates. • The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Music, and Leeds School of Business offer certificate programs in a variety of areas of interest. Successful completion of specified course work in these areas entitles you to a certificate issued by the dean of the college or school. • The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) was designed to create research partnerships between faculty and undergraduate students in all disciplines for research or creative work. • Residential Academic Programs (RAPs) allow you to take select courses in your residential hall, in a small-group setting. There are 11 programs in different areas of interest, such as American West, business, cultural diversity, engineering and applied science, international studies, liberal arts, natural science, and service learning. • We have Academic Enrichment Programs for you if you seek leadership training, research experience, academic honors, the mentoring of peers and faculty, interna- tional experience, community involvement, military officer training, and more. • The CU-LEAD Alliance offers scholarship opportunities for highly motivated students and allows you to participate in programs that promote academic excellence and personal and professional success in a supportive, multicultural community. • You may choose a classroom in another part of the world. CU-Boulder sponsors study abroad programs in more than 65 countries. Study abroad offers a chance to experience the world firsthand during your educational career. As you prepare for your time here at CU-Boulder, I urge you to give careful thought to how you can become involved in the life of the campus, both inside and outside the class- room, and to ask yourself several important questions - questions like: What is it that you wish to accomplish during your time here at CU? How will you use the many opportuni- ties available to you to grow, to stretch, and to shape your own personal future? What can you expect of us and what can we expect of you? These are hard questions, but questions that you need to ask now and to think about care- fully, because while your first set of finals may seem like a long way away and graduation even further, they will both be here before you know it - so take some time, be introspective, talk with those closest to you about what it means to be a student here at CU-Boulder and what it is that you want to accomplish during your time here.
