1Overview
The year und
er review was a particularly challenging one for theLibrary bu t amidst these challenges there were importantachievements. The L ibrary continued to utilize innovative measures tocreate public s paces and to upgrade and remodel facilities while at thesame time max imizing the use of storage areas. With strong commitment from staff mem bers many targets for the 2010/2011 academic year wereachieved. Users of the Library benefitted from ongoing renovations to the facilitie s and the reconfigu ration of spaces in the Science and Medical BranchLibrari es, and the construction of a new Law Library in the Faculty ofLaw bui lding. The continuing upgrades resulted in increased seatingcapacity, provis ion of spaces for group and individual study, improvement in com puter facilities, and the provision of specializedspaces for pos tgraduate students. As a result of these upgrades theLibrary now prov ides 271 computers for student access, 440 electricaloutlets, and wireless connectivity for personal laptop computers, whileseating has i ncreased by 20% since July 2010.Central to the impact of these d
evelopments is a cadre of trained staffwith effectiv e customer service skills, so staff development and trainingwere key focu s areas to improve administrative efficiency and servicethroughou t the Library system. The Library continued to build itscollection of electroni c material by providing access to approximately 46, 2165 el
ectronic journals and 3,882 electronic books. Usage of thedatabases increased significantly, an indication of the direction that users are moving i n. Correspondingly, loans of print material have beendecreasi ng. In June 2011, the Library established a Marketing Teamwhose mand ate is to communicate to the academic community theservices and resources offered by the Library. Digitization of materialfrom the Special Collections continued. Some 300 rare maps weredigi tized during the year under review. Systems librarians across theUnivers ity campuses worked to complete UWILinC, a common interface for acces sing information. With the availability of UWILinC the campus comm unity will have access to a "state of the art" search anddis covery interface which allows users to search simultaneously theprint, electronic, and digital collections from all four campuses. WORKOF THE DEPARTMENTNew Stude
nts OrientationClose t
o 1000 students attended or ientation sessions comprising a30-minu te PowerPoint presentation on the library and its resourcesfollowed by a tour of the Main Library. The tours were conducted by3 well-trained peer tour guides. At the end of the sessions students wereprovid ed with book marks detailing the library services and openinghours. I n September 2010, the Library, in collaboration with MITS, sent indiv idual emails to incoming students to attend OPAC and databas etraining s essions realizing excellent response. In addition, in an effort toput new stud ents at ease, staff members in public service areas of alllibraries wore ASK ME pins invi ting students to approach staffmembers wi th questions and problems.LoanStatisticsThe overall loan s
tatistics continue to reflect a decline in all areas withonly an increase i n Reading Room loans during the extended hours. Thisis no dou bt attributable to the use of alternative resources such asdatabases , e-books, on-line journals and the Internet. As demonstratedfrom one of the most popul ar database, EbscoHost usage has increasedby 37%.SCIENCEDIRECT to which UWI librari

y of Library MaterialThe Library secu red funding through the auspices of UWI Development and End owment Fund (UWIDEF) for the acqui sition of a 3M BookCheck Secu rity System at the Main Library. Installation of the systemwas giv en a very narrow window and had to be done by December 31,2010 . Working in collaboration with Campus Projects Office, TELi Con,3M Jama
ica and UWIDEF, the Library w as able to launch the system onJanuar y 18, 2011.Tattle strips were appl ied to all books in the Main Library, except rarebooks, by the end of March 2011. This has had a tremendous impact onthe work of the Loan and Reference Section not only in terms of staffefficienci es but also in customer satisfaction as now items notlegitimatel y borrowed could be easily detected. Consequently the libraryattendant who checked book s is now assigned other duties particularlyin assi sting with the speedy delivery of services in areas such as fetchingRBC books and as sisting clients in locating material on the open shelves. MONA INFORMATION LITERACY UNITThe academic year w
as another very productive one for the MonaInformation L iteracy Unit (MILU). The Unit endeavou red to ensure that all stu dents were given training in the use of the catalogue and databases, and a greater ef fort was made to embed these key areas in trainingsessi ons requested by faculty. This type of training empowered studentsto access these res ources at anytime and anywhere. With the improv ement of services to postgraduate students, a recordnumber of pos tgraduates came to the Library for consultation onreferencing and presentation of their theses prior to submission forexamination.
