Bauer BG Ltd"s Reconstruction of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, Skopje 2 01

The Introduction

Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) have been working with United Nations Development programme to support the process of implementation of BIM within 4 construction companies in North Macedonia.

On Thursday 28th January 2021 a one-day workshop was delivered by CSIC and led by Colin Hastie of Bruach Design

and Consultancy Ltd to develop the knowledge of one company and serve as proof of concept that there is a demand

for this type of activity within the sector. A copy of the slides from this workshop can be found here

3Currently Bauer BG use digital tools for design and

drawing production, for structural analysis and for

3D visualisation. Software packages currently in

clude AutoCAD 2D & 3D, ArchiCAD, and SketchUp.

Visualisation tools include 3Ds Max and Lumion

3D. Structural and engineering tools include Ro

bot Structural Analysis, Revit Structure, Advance Steel and Arm Cad.Bauer BG Ltd are a design and construction company of 175 employees, undertaking work across a range of scales and sectors across Macedonia including civil engineering (roads, railways and utilities) and building construction (refurbishment, new build and high-rise developments), with architectural, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, interior design and furniture design disciplines in-house. Typically they undertake initial design for projects, with the detailed designed passed to others. Design involves often complex mechanical and electrical installations, such as at the new build courthouse building in Idrizovo. Previous projects have also included tricky or awkward city centre sites, with challenging logistics, and large scale multiple-phase projects which require considerable co-ordination not only with other trades and construction teams, but also with the public and vehicle or pedestrian access. Refurbishment work has taken place on significant public and historic buildings, like the reconstruction of government building in Skopje and the State Audit Office. Civils contracts often involve the co-ordination with complex below-ground utilities networks, and in the past the accuracy of this information has been challenging to progress on programme.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Before construction, design proposals in Macedonia must be audited by a separate company to ensure they comply with all state codes and regulations, the transfer and export of in formation is important to ensure this happens smoothly and without error. With a multi-disciplinary in-house team of de signers and contractors, Bauer BG hope BIM will offer a prac tical and efficient project management approach, improving communication and co-ordination between the different teams and allow for quicker design and construction processes.

Digital Aspirations

In advance of the presentation, Bauer BG identified the following expectations for the exercise. These areas, along with other areas that came up during the presentation and workshop sessions, will be addressed through this report. BIM Case Studies

As part of this £500m civil engineering project used a BIM approach to deliver one of the most complex parts, an interchange junction which with substantial excava tion, underground utilities, and the road network had to remain open during the construction works.

Part of a £170m project to widen an existing railway line in the north of Scotland. To widen the railway line to a double track, this project used BIM as a mechanism to ensure the project was thoroughly designed prior to construction, and provided a digital model for the client to use in maintaining their asset beyond construction.

Plowman Craven

The largest railway infrastructure project in Europe at the time, comprising 26 miles of new underground tunnels across central London. BIM was used for co- ordination of design disciplines and to minimise risks during construction. Using a central model location saved indicatively more than £10 million per annum for 7 years than a traditional workflow. The model with time and cost information embedded was used on a number of sites, and typically saved £1.2 million at each contract through the reduction of two full time equivalent staff needed to process and agree progress. The analysis and interrogation construction scenarios using the 3D model with different planning schedules at Farringdon Station cost some £120k but enabled £8 million to be saved from risk contingency.

Mixed Use Development,

Hay Street, Perth, Australia

This development, a $500m multi-storey mixed use de velopment including offices, retail, restaurants and a ho tel, was built in the middle of Perth, Australia. As part of the process, a 29% saving in waste has been seen relative to typical Australian construction processes.

Building Smart

When work is undertaken on existing buildings, laser scanning can provide an accurate starting point for the design exercise, and an accurate record of the historic building before works take place. Below are links to some articles and project examples which have used this technology.
