un saint ,paintedbyMagrittein1935-36(RMCRn°392),showninFig. 1.?epresentpaperproposesanoverview digitalmicroscopytechniques.Experimental
gathered.ItincorporatesfullsizeimagesofDieu n'est pas
un saint undervisible(Fig. 1)andUVlight(Additional file 1:FigureS1),acquiredbyusingthehomemadescan ningsystemoftheCEA[ 10 ].?eacquiredimageshave beenenrichedbyXRRandIRRimages(Fig. 2).?e talmicroscope approximately35 hbyusingtheCEAtranslationstage andhomemadeXRFsystem[ 11 13 ],madeofaMoxtekMagnumX-raytube(50 kV)(withaAganode),adetec
torX-123SDDAmptek (25 mm 2 ),witharesolutionof130at5.9 keV.Scanningstepwassetto1 mm,speedto
3 mm/s.X-raytubewassettoavoltageof40 kVanda
currentof120 µA.Spectraweretreatedinbatchmode usingPyMCA[ 14 ],allowingtoseparatethesignalsfrom thedifferentchemicalelements. ?eanalysesbyRSwereperformedwiththeEnwave usingalaserat785 nm[ 15 ].?reeRamanspectraof10 sintegratedthreetimeswereacquiredforeachof
necessarytoobtainvaluableresults(ca.30 mW).?e recordedspectraweretreatedusingGRAMSAI .?e ableinstrumentation.Resultsand

analysisconductedonthewholepicturehasprovidedfurthersubstantialinformationaboutthehiddenpicture,especiallyinregardstothepaletteusedforit.Indeed,theelementaldistributionmapsrecordedforDieu n'est pas un saintallowedcharacterizingtheinorganicpigmentsassociatedtothefeaturesformerlydepicted.Forthesakeofclarity,thematerialinformationandtheanalyticaldatacollectedforthegroundlayer,thefemalefigure,thesky/bluebackground,thewall/ocherbackground,thedoveandtheshoe,arediscussedseparately.
