Ear cytology how to

  • How do you take an ear swab?

An ear drainage culture is collected by placing a cotton swab gently in the ear canal.
The sample is sent to the laboratory for testing to isolate and identify the type of organism causing the ear infection.
The ear consists of external, middle, and inner structures..

  • After studying the sample, the test results are given.
If the results are normal, it means that there is no growth of fungi, bacteria and viruses on the culture and that you do not have an ear infection.
An abnormal result means that there are signs of ear infection, which may be caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses.

What are cytological preparations of a normal external ear canal?

Cytologic preparations of a normal external ear canal may contain corneocytes, amorphous material (cerumen) and small amounts of Malassezia yeasts (< 5 / HPF).
In case of Malassezia infection the number of yeasts is higher than 5–10 / HPF.
In case of bacterial overgrowth a large number of bacteria is observed without inflammatory cells.

Why is ear cytology important?

Ear cytology provides an abundance of useful clinical information that can easily be obtained with in-house testing.
When combined with otoscopic examination findings, cytology is an efficient tool in helping clinicians make a diagnosis and assess treatment response (ie, whether to discontinue or change therapy).
