  • Why is my Pap smear negative but HPV positive?

Early infections or resolving infections with HPV may not reveal any cellular abnormalities.
The most common reason for a negative Pap test with a positive HPV result is that the patient has an HPV infection, but the infection is not causing any cellular abnormalities..

  • A normal (or “negative”) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix.
    This is good news.
But you still need to get Pap tests in the future.
New cell changes can still form on your cervix.
People who receive a negative cytology report will have a repeat sample in 12 months. If the HPV positive and cytology negative result persists, we refer the patient to colposcopy on the third occurrence of this result. If any repeat test is HPV negative, the laboratory will advise routine recall.
Women with negative cytology and positive HPV co-testing results who are aged 30 years and older should be managed in one of two ways: Repeat co-testing in 12 months. If the repeat cervical cytology test result is LSIL or higher or the HPV test result is still positive; the patient should be referred for colposcopy.

Screening Options

There are now three recommended options for cervical cancer screening in individuals aged 30–65 years: primary hrHPV testing every 5 years, cervical cytology alone every 3 years, or co-testing with a combination of cytology and hrHPV testing every 5 years Table.
1) All three screening strategies are effective, and each provides a reasonable balance .
